In these times, a town was fortunate to have a doctor – though the doctor may not have been much more knowledgeable about medicine than his patients. After the Civil War, there were many advances in medicine. However, before then, medical knowledge was very limited. While many home remedies worked, some of them not only failed to cure anything, but actually caused symptoms to worsen. Listed below are common remedies that existed in the Old South during the 1800s. BaldnessIf you were going bald in the Old South, your home remedy probably would not have helped your hair loss – but it would have helped you lose your friends. One home remedy was to smear garlic on your head and only rinse it off once a week. If that did not work, you were advised to try a healthy glob of horseradish, vinegar, and egg yolk or raw onion juice on your head. Still not working? Another remedy suggested that you smear your head with fresh cow manure.HeadachesIf you had a headache, you could not go to the drugstore for aspirin. Instead, you had your choice of sipping on strong coffee or celery seed water, taking a walk, or applying a bandage soaked with turpentine and smeared with lard to your head. If you did not have a headache before the treatment, you probably had one after. Bad BreathIf you were a man or woman with sour breath, you would have been advised to suck on rosemary ashes, rinse your mouth with lavender water, and brush your teeth with sage leaves.Hair Control596265027813000Bad hair day? You could try combing sweet milk with rose perfume in it or castor oil with cologne – then hope the milk didn’t sour in the heat or a wandering fly didn’t get stuck in the oil.For obvious reasons, people during this time were always interested in finding new treatments and cures. There were people who would try to take advantage of this by selling medicines that they claimed would cure certain ailments. Some would even claim that their elixirs would cure anything!
