A Teacher's Resource

Thank you for inviting Eddie into your classroom and we hope you enjoyed Eddie's Litterless Road Tour! Waste diversion can be a confusing topic for young age groups, but we hope that through our creative methods you will have an opportunity to help the children make a connection between litter and their actions.

The presentation and the resource materials are curriculum aligned in most provinces and territories for the primary grades.

It is recommended that this guide be used as soon as possible to ensure the presentation material is still fresh in their minds. Within it are some fun ways you can get your students thinking about waste diversion and how they can help. There are reproducible pages that may be copied for education purposes. If you have any comments or questions about the presentation or resource, please contact EnviroEd at Clean: EnviroEd@clean.ns.ca

Activity 2 - Be 'Super' and Write to Eddie!

Eddie loves to receive mail! And he loves to send mail too, especially special surprises!

Have students write or draw Eddie a letter about how they can be environmental superheroes and let him know how you feel about litter. This can be done as a whole class or as individual student letters and they make great literacy assessments!

Letters can be mailed Attn: Eddie the Superhero Cat Clean Foundation, 126 Portland Street, Dartmouth NS, B2Y 1H8.

Please remember to include a return mailing address (and teacher name) so that Eddie can send students back their special surprise!

Activity 3 ? Host a School Yard or Community Clean-up!

Plan a school yard clean up with your class and if your school yard is already wonderfully spotless, perhaps you can clean up another area of your school community. Ask students to make a list of supplies that they need, help them think through the process of what will happen, what they might encounter and what they will need for the clean-up.

You can get the materials you need for your cleanup through The Great Nova Scotia Pick-MeUp program which is now administered through Adopt-A-Highway. Go to nspickmeup.ca for more information.

Activity 4 ? Litter Less Campaign

Discuss with your class the kinds of messages they could give to other people to help them prevent litter. What actions can students take individually and collectively in their home, school and community to eliminate and prevent litter?

Ask students to think up or to research catchy slogans, phrases and/or images that are meant to remind people to prevent littering. Then, have students come up with their own "campaigns".

Students can draw campaign posters and put them up for display in the classroom.

Activity 5 ? Laws Against Litter

Does your classroom or even your school have rules against littering? If they don't, ask students to make up a set of rules that your classroom will follow.

Every province and municipality has laws surrounding littering. Have older students research those laws and answer some questions: What are the laws? Are there fines?

Activity 6 ? Practice Good Sorting

There are great activities out there that help students learn how to better sort their waste.

Divert NS has Waste Educators in every region that would be happy to help teach your students about proper sorting.

Additionally, the Mi'kmaw Conservation Group has developed a great online game on wastesorting.

Activity 7 ? Map the School

Using a map of the school and or the school property, take your class on a walk around the school and the playground. Have students identify where current litter receptacles are located and areas where the majority of litter is found. Have students mark these locations on their map.

Discuss whether they think the system in place is working or whether it needs improvements. Have them indicate on their maps where additional litter receptacles could be placed to help ensure litter does not end up on the ground.

Activity 8 - Sing with Eddie

Here are the lyrics to the songs that your students heard and learned today. All the music from Eddie's shows can be found at . The YouTube link is featured in the Media section on this page.

"So Sad"

If I was a little critter, and I had to live in litter, I'd feel sad.

If I was an octopus, and I swam through garbage juice, I'd feel sad.

And if, I was an ant so small, and my hill was stuck with a straw, I'd feel sad.

Chorus x2: So sad, so sad, I'd feel sad.

If I was a grizzly bear, and I found gum in my hair, I'd feel sad.

If I was a baby bird, and plastic bits were in my food, I'd feel sad.

And if, I was a bouncing frog, and I found garbage in my pond, I'd feel sad.

Chorus x2: So sad, so sad, I'd feel sad.

I am not a critter though, I'm a person who should really know That littering is bad.

So bad, so bad, littering is bad So bad, so bad, littering is bad.

"Oh my Belly"

Eddie is a cat with a cause, He's tired of finding litter underneath his paws! Is it food, or is it waste? If I eat it, how will it taste?

Chorus: Oh my belly, oh my mind, How much more of this must I find? Icky litter, icky litter, doo doo doo, Yucky litter, yucky litter, ooo ooo ooo!

Don't drop it down, Keep it in your hand! The playground is not your garbage can! If not on the ground, Where does it go? I bet, you, I bet you, I bet you, you know! The garbage can, the recycling can! How smart you are, how smart I am!

Chorus

Pick it all up, Do it right now! Never leave anything on the ground! The critters will thank you for cleaning up their home. The critters will love you for leaving them alone. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh... Sorry everyone, I got carried away!

Chorus

"Nothing to Throw Away"

(Please note this song has been extended for the CD so it will sound a little bit different from what the children heard in the presentation)

No garbage in the garbage bin. No garbage in the school I'm in. Nothing to throw away.

I could reuse my toys. I could share with girls and boys! Nothing to throw away.

Nothing to throw away. Reducing from day to day. It is the only way, listen to what I say. Nothing to throw away!

The only thing that I would have Would be my friends And good time laughs! Nothing to throw away!

No garbage underneath my feet, No garbage cluttered in the streets, No garbage from my recess treats! Nothing to throw away!

Nothing to throw away. Reducing from day to day. It is the only way, listen to what I say. Nothing to throw away!

Thank you for learning about keeping our Earth clean and why it's so important not to litter!

Never litter, never litter, if you do, you'll hurt a critter! We are always developing exciting new programs here at Clean. Our newest program elementary age students is Eddie's Waste-Less Lunch Challenge. It is a month-long extension of Eddie's Litterless Road Tour, our award-winning original puppet show. It takes students on a journey to help our Earth through classroom initiatives and extra visits from Eddie and some of his new friends. The original Eddie's Litterless Road Tour (litter and waste abatement) was followed by Eddie's Dripless Road Tour (water conservation), Eddie and the Air Out There (air quality, renewable energy), and most recently Eddie's Waste-Less Lunch Challenge.

And Eddie has gone digital too! In 2016 Eddie launched his first curriculum aligned video game

with the support of Nova Scotia Environment. It is geared towards 4-8 year olds and is based on his air road tour:

Eddie and the Air Out There. It is called EnviroEddie:Air and can be found at or it can be found on the iOS App store or the Google Play store, just search for

EnviroEddie:Air! We have great programming on all sorts of environmental and sustainability topics for Primary through Senior students across Nova Scotia! If you would like information on receiving any of our programming, please contact us! EnviroEd@clean.ns.ca
