Confirmation--October 7, 2020--Bear Lake Concordia and St. Paul ParishWELCOME NEW Confirmation Student: Carson ClaussenPART 1--25 MinutesOpening Prayer--2020 Confirmand Parker HintzSharing--Where did I see God’s love in my life in the past week? Everyone, please!!!REVIEW from DEVO last week-- The Lord’s Prayer is included in Luther’s Small Catechism. Jesus Christ taught us how to pray and we pray together in church at nearly every service using the words that Christ taught us: The Lord’s Prayer. How many petitions are there in the Lord’s Prayer? Let’s take one of those seven petitions, The Fifth Petition, and review it…. Forgive us our sins as forgive those who sin against us……We ask in this prayer that our heavenly Father would not hold our sins against us and deny forgiveness to us. We are not worthy of God’s forgiveness, but we ask God (humbly) for his forgiveness. Remember: Forgive as we are forgiven. It is necessary for us to forgive is we are to expect God’s forgiveness.DEVOS--Dwelling in the WordTonight’s DEVO-- The Ten Commandments--THE LAW?Exodus 20:1-17 New Revised Standard Version The Ten Commandments20?Then God spoke all these words: 2?I am the?Lord?your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery;?3?you shall have no other gods before?me. 4?You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.?5?You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the?Lord?your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,?6?but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation?of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7?You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the?Lord?your God, for the?Lord?will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. 8?Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy.?9?Six days you shall labor and do all your work.?10?But the seventh day is a sabbath to the?Lord?your God; you shall not do any work—you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns.?11?For in six days the?Lord?made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the?Lord?blessed the sabbath day and consecrated it. 12?Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the?Lord?your God is giving you. 13?You shall not murder. 14?You shall not commit adultery. 15?You shall not steal. 16?You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17?You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.OPEN DISCUSSION: How are these “The Law”? What aspect of life do these 10 Commandments reflect? Is God a jealous God? (We read that in this passage!) --What does it mean that God is a jealous God? (Worldly world-centered life vs. God-centered life!!!)VIDEO 1: The Ten CommandmentsIn the Lutheran Church, we talk about “the Law” vs. “Gospel. What does that mean?Luther basically had THREE uses of the law……The include:First Use of the Law: CURB/FENCETwo Tables of the Law--knowing that there is Divine God, the Judge of the Universe--Order in Living/LifeCivil useOrder--to keep boundaries in life and interactions with others and people(s)We have the Bible giving some guidelinesThis will NOT save anyone, but helps us restrain “evil” in society and the worldSecond Use of the Law: MIRRORShows who we really areThis Law, in this case, shows our shortcomings/sin.It shows us that we cannot save ourselves and this points us to the Cross of Jesus Christ. It is only through Jesus Christ that we know God, realize God’s grace, and celebrate Salvation--ONLY through the Cross of Christ. But never lose sight of Grace Alone through Faith Alone in Christ Alone by the Scriptures Alone to the Glory of God Alone!!!!!Third Use of the Law: GUIDEWhat we believe, teach, and confess gives us a clear picture of what HOLY and A SANCTIFIED LIFE (sanctified living) looks like in every aspect of our life and our work (vocationally)Here again, we have the Bible, Catechism, Confirmation (Faith formation)God sent God’s son, Jesus Christ, to FULFILL the LAW because we could not measure us to that. We will “fall short of the glory of God every time!” God’s Grace saves us. Let’s say Parker’s Confirmation verse, John 3:16--For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will have eternal life. What we believe, teach, and confess (set forth a picture of what holy, sanctified living looks like -- VOCATIONALLY)BREAK--5 MINUTESPART TWO-25 MinutesRecite (together) the Apostles’ CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.Video 3: Article 1 of the Apostles’ CreedVideo 4: More on Article 1 of the Apostle’s CreedDo you ever have feelings that you may not believe in God? Psalm 8:9 - O Lord, our Sovereign God, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”The first part of the Apostles’ Creed points to God’s character as Creator and almighty Father. These two tell us a lot about who God is--a loving, watching, involved Creator who keeps working and making and CREATING now and forever. God stays intimately connected to what’s been created and, indeed, keep creating throughout ETERNITY--there IS NO END!The Creed is not about US, but about God and God’s pathway through time for the redemption of humankind. We are invited in to believe and to CONFESS this Creed and our other Creeds. There are many denominations, but we have many confessional/creedal things in common….. We believe in one Holy catholic (little C) and Apostolic Church…????God is NOT a man. God is God. Jesus calls God “Father”, and so do the creeds, BUT that is all about RELATIONSHIP IN SPIRIT AND HEART.Creed--NOT JUST WORDS, but ideals that we LIVE--then we are working toward that holiness--that Sanctification--that Luther described in many of his writings.PART THREE-5 Minutes--LOOKING TO NEXT WEEK…Assignments for Next Week…Everyone, please plan on staying an extra 15 minutes next week for Confirmation Practice.
