FROM FR. DAN’S DESK…

World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland concluded last Sunday with Pope Francis celebrating an Outdoor Mass with almost 2 million young people from around the world! I watched the video of the Mass on Sunday night and how inspirational it was to see the Youth of the world interacting with one another – that is the unique aspect of World Youth Day and the vision of Pope St. John Paul II, its founder. It was announced that young people came from around the world, sometimes with great effort and at great inconvenience, just to be with the Holy Father! Pope Francis challenged the Youth not to be “couch potatoes” but to go back out and make a difference in the world. SERVICE for our young people is a key to making that difference! I remember going with my Youth Group in East Longmeadow to Kingstree, South Carolina for a week long service experience with the Felician Sisters who has a mission there. What a great week we had – fun in the vans on the way down, 5 days working with the Sisters and the cutest little kids in the world in their Summer Recreation Program, and stopping at Ocean City, MD for some relaxation on the way back home. Though it was work and it was hot, our Youth came to love giving of themselves to others and learned that it can be more fun than they thought! As I mentioned last week, check out the Tim Tebow Foundation and their Youth Day of Service on July 23. What an incredible effort to motivate Youth for SERVICE! Tim Tebow – you never disappoint me!

Well another successful Parish Vacation Bible Camp has concluded for this year! I am always amazed at the creative work that goes into making our VBS so successful and enjoyable for our children. My BIG THANKS goes out to Sheila Conroy and Mary Regan – Coordinators of our Parish VBC. They truly give their time along with their heart and soul for several weeks, in preparing for the Camp! I also thank Lisa and Paige Stawasz who led the Camp this year in word and music, along with a myriad of other Volunteers from Set Design and Decorators to our Kitchen help, Crew Leaders, etc. We will have a complete list of VBC Volunteers in the bulletin next week!

Well I sure did hear a lot of Confessions this past Wednesday! This past week two great Catholic High School Camps were held in our Diocese. C.A.M.P.S. at Lakeside in the Berkshires, and New Spirit at Camp Holy Cross in Goshen. Both had Penance Services for the Youth on Wednesday, with the opportunity for the individual Sacrament of Confession. There were 200 high school youth at each Camp, but it’s always an uplifting day for me to see the faith of these young men and women and the good work these camps do. Though I’m usually exhausted leaving C.A.M.P.S. at 1:00 in the morning with the rest of the priests, having heard the last Confession – I am always uplifted!

Last week I shared a little with you about the “Just Faith” Program that we will begin here in our Parish this Fall. Just Faith, is as an educational program that assists Catholics in learning about the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church. Deacon Bill Toller will be here the weekend of August 20/21 to offer information about the program and the opportunity to ask questions and register for it. The Program will be held on Monday Evenings from 6:00-8:30PM for 24 weeks. Start date is September 12. Look for a bulletin insert and more about it in the weeks ahead!

Just a reminder that one of the special gifts of this Jubilee Year of Mercy is to visit one or all of the designated “Pilgrimage Churches” in the Diocese and to pass through the “Holy Door” of that church, and receive the indulgence offered during this Extraordinary Holy Year! The following is a list of the Designated Western Massachusetts Pilgrimage Churches: Springfield Deanery: St. Michael’s Cathedral, Springfield,

Hampden Central Deanery: St. Stanislaus, Chicopee; Hampden West Deanery: Sacred Heart, Feeding Hills; Hampden East Deanery: Divine Mercy, Three Rivers; Greater Holyoke Deanery: St. Theresa, South Hadley; Hampshire Deanery: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Northampton; Berkshire Deanery: St. Joseph, Pittsfield; Franklin Deanery: Blessed Sacrament, Greenfield; and National Shrine of The Divine Mercy, Stockbridge. Please read the Bulletin Insert this week that explains Plenary Indulgences, and consider taking advantage of this Spiritual Grace, by visiting one of our Pilgrim Churches here in our Diocese before the end of the Holy Year on November 20!

Coming up on Tuesday August 16 is the first Diocesan Catholic Youth and Family Day at Six Flags in Agawam. Please see the information in the bulletin. It should be a great day at the park, beginning with Mass with Bishop Rozanski , an all you can eat luncheon buffet and access to the rides, as well as the water park area! It’s a great price – please also note a special price for all season pass holders! Youth from all around the Diocese will be there!

Coming up quickly on August 18 and 19 is the Annual “Faith on Fire Rally” at Sacred Heart Parish in Feeding Hills. This has grown to be quite a wonderful event of prayer and music! See the bulletin for details!

Finally, I just want to thank Helen and Charlie Curtin for their kind Birthday Wishes to me last week on the radio! Helen and Charlie host a Polka Show every Sunday from 10:00 - 11:00AM on WMUA 91.1 FM – the UMass Radio Station. Many of you mentioned that Helen and Charlie dedicated a polka to me last week on the show and it was one of my favorites and one that they often played for my dad, called – “Steve’s Polka”! Tune in some time to hear Helen and Charlie and some upbeat Polka music, and lift your spirits!

God Bless, Fr. Dan

PILGRIM IMAGE OF DIVINE MERCY

Our Parish Pilgrim Image of Divine Mercy has been travelling through our Parish, residing each week in the home of a different family. The Image is an 8x10 framed picture that comes along with a small box of informational materials including prayers on Divine Mercy, as well as materials appropriate for children. Families are asked to display the image in a prominent place at home and to pray each day as a family around the Image. Many of the families that have already hosted the Image have said what an honor it was to have the Image in their homes, and what peace it brought to their homes and families. If you would like to host the Pilgrim Image in your home, there are still some weeks available. Please call the Parish Office to select a week, or for more information.

FORMING CONSCIENCES

FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP

Catholics Care.

Catholics Vote.

"We need to participate for the common good. Sometimes we hear: a good Catholic is not interested in politics. This is not true: good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that the leader can govern."

- Pope Francis, 9/16/13

The Catholic bishops of the United States are pleased to offer once again to the Catholic faithful “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”, our teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. This statement represents our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy. We urge our pastors, lay and religious faithful, and all people of good will to use this statement to help form their consciences; to teach those entrusted to their care; to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue; and to shape political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. The statement lifts up our dual heritage as both faithful Catholics and American citizens with rights and duties as participants in the civil order. You may download the document at . Also look for copies of the document near the bulletins.

IN THE WORDS OF POPE FRANCIS…

In order to be capable of mercy…we must first of all dispose ourselves to listen to the Word of God. This means rediscovering the value of silence in order to meditate on the Word that comes to us. In this way, it will be possible to contemplate God’s mercy and adopt it as our lifestyle.

MERCY AMONG US …

IN OUR WORLD, OUR COUNTRY,

AND OUR COMMUNITIES

Arms and Legs for Others – a classic story

Bob Butler lost his legs in a 1965 land mine explosion in Vietnam. He returned home a war hero. Twenty years later, he proved once again that heroism comes from the heart. Butler was working in his garage in a small town in Arizona on a hot summer day when he heard a woman's screams coming from a nearby house. He began rolling his wheelchair toward the house but the dense shrubbery wouldn't allow him access to the back door. So he got out of his chair and started to crawl through the dirt and bushes. I had to get there, he says. It didn't matter how much it hurt. When Butler arrived at the pool there was a three-year-old girl named Stephanie Hanes lying at the bottom. She had been born without arms and had fallen in the water and couldn't swim. Her mother stood over her baby screaming frantically. Butler dove to the bottom of the pool and brought little Stephanie up to the deck. Her face was blue, she had no pulse and was not breathing. Butler immediately went to work performing CPR to revive her while Stephanie's mother telephoned the fire department. She was told the paramedics were already out on a call. Helplessly, she sobbed and hugged Butler's shoulder. As Butler continued with his CPR, he calmly reassured her. Don't worry, he said. I was her arms to get out of the pool. It'll be okay. I am now her lungs. Together we can make it. Seconds later the little girl coughed, regained consciousness and began to cry. As they hugged and rejoiced together the mother asked Butler how he knew it would be okay. The truth is, I didn't know, he told her. But when my legs were blown off in the war, I was all alone in a field. No one was there to help except a little Vietnamese girl. As she struggled to drag me into her village, she whispered in broken English, It okay. You can live. I be your legs. Together we make it. Her kind words brought hope to my soul and I wanted to do the same for Stephanie. There are simply those times when we cannot stand alone. There are those times when we need someone to be our legs, our arms, our friend!
