About Your PNAC "Year"

For the "Romani" a simple question about what class you belong to never has been easy. Prior to 1974, the general policy was to respond that you were ordained in December of the year prior to when you actually graduated from the university and the seminary formation program. It was always a toss up with whom you would celebrate your anniversary of ordination. Would you celebrate with your classmates from minor seminary who were ordained usually on a different calendar year or would you celebrate with your PNAC classmates? Not wanting to exclude ourselves from either group, most of us made each major anniversary a two-year event.

Since 1974, the Seminary Department of the Pontifical North American College has made the December Diaconate Ordination in St. Peter's Basilica its major event. Most alumni returned to their home dioceses to be ordained in the same year as their diocesan classmates. So, at first thought, it would seem that the ordination and graduation years would be the same. But things are never that simple. Many seminarians take a pastoral or diaconal year of at-home formation before finally completing their seminary experience. Others stay at the seminary as "fifth-year priests."

For the record, we use the class photos displayed at the seminary as the criterion for determining a seminary year. To determine the class year for the graduate house (Casa Santa Maria or Casa San Giovanni) we use the year when the alumnus actually left the graduate house.

Listed below are the names of our most recently deceased brother alumni. The Alumni Association has arranged for a Mass to be celebrated in the College Chapel for each of our deceased brothers.

All alumni are encouraged to remember in prayer and at Mass our deceased brother alumni. Holy cards will be sent along with the Annual Directory, which will arrive later this spring.

We regret that space limitations do not allow us to give more ample obituaries of our alumni. News comes to us in very different ways about the passing or our alumni. Sometimes classmates are very good about sending in photographs and internet links to newspaper notices. Occasionally we simply get a short E-mail or phone call. Sometimes the news is timely and sometimes we only learn of a death when mail is returned.
