I. Introduction

Depression: the experience of hopelessness

A high percentage of people experience depression

Depression is treatable—but one has to do the right things

II. What is depression?

Depression: things are de-pressed—pressed down

People may be literally unable to move

Less depressed people may normalize a sense of grayness

Clinical depression can interfere with function

Symptoms of depression

- Mood and loss of energy

- Thinking gets painful—the mind generates negative thoughts

- Anhedonia ‘life without pleasure’

- Hopelessness

- Loss of libido, disturbed sleep cycle, change of appetite

Depression affects heart, mind, soul, and strength

III. What causes depression?

Depression is about loss

1. Love; basic attachments

When we are without love or lose love, that’s a loss

2. Power; self-control

Learned helplessness: ‘nothing I can do will make a difference’

3. A loss of feeling OK about our negative parts

A hurt or wound that one has never been able to resolve

4. Achievement of adulthood: equal with other adults

Stuck in the child position: “one down”

5. Trauma

Something happens in life that taps into unresolved issues

IV. What you do about this

1. Get connected: groups, counseling

2. Power: boundaries and self-control, being assertive

3. Pain and loss: grief and forgiveness work

Do this in a relational setting

Critical thinking: cognitive therapy

The three P’s —personalizing, pervasive, permanent

4. Talents: Get a life—and do it in steps

V. The biology of depression

Depression can be an altered chemical state in the brain

It’s not a spiritual problem: the brain needs the chemicals it needs

Antidepressants are medical interventions to a biological problem

They’re not unspiritual

Small Group Discussion Questions

Temporarily Out of Order, 3—Slipping into Darkness

1. How have you seen your guilt affecting your relationships?

2. Have you ever experienced your church as a place that administers guilt rather than grace? What could you do to change that?

3. How might you experience the difference between guilt and godly sorrow?

4. How can you experience God’s grace incarnationally? How can you extend it?
