Missing Work Rules

Welcome to Ms. Craven’s 7th Grade

Social Studies Class!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

If you are new to Pine Forest Middle School, welcome! If you are returning, welcome back! This year we are going to explore American history from a global perspective beginning in the year 1450 continuing through to the present. Basically, this just means that we will talk about how America’s history influenced, and was influenced by, other countries and nations. Some topics that we’ll cover include: Revolutions, Reformations, Civil Wars, World Wars and current global issues such as terrorism.

Just a few reminders and some new information about this year at PFMS:

Our school collects box tops to raise money for our school so be sure to send those in with your child so that they can turn them into their team teachers-teams compete against each other for ice cream parties so keep on the lookout!

The Cumberland County Library offers students access to , which provides free homework help online with live tutors from 2 p.m. until midnight every day.  These tutors can assist students in grades K-12 with any subject and are available through any computer or mobile device.

Class Features

Two features that I will use in my class that will help in communication are Remind101 and a classroom website. These are optional for students and parents to take part in, but helpful as they provide reminders about tests, homework and information about our class.

Remind101 is a free (standard text message rates apply) service that provides a safe way for me to text message or email my students and parents. Using Remind101, I can engage my students and parents more effectively without either party knowing phone numbers. If you and/or your student wish to partake in this optional opportunity just text this code: @27197 to this phone number: (785) 879-4970.

Our classroom website is just another way for me to get information out to my students and parents. I will provide helpful study links, class documents, info about the interactive notebooks, etc. The link is:

Classroom Policies

As in any successful classroom, we have policies and procedures to help things run a little smoother. Here they are so that you can be aware of them and discuss with your student, as needed:

1. Obey the school’s rules, as well as the Navigator team rules.

2. Raise your hand to be recognized unless otherwise directed.

3. Respect everyone in the classroom.

4. Your student will be given five (5) locker and pencil tickets for the year. They will not be allowed to leave class to go to their locker and may not borrow a pencil without a ticket. Ultimately, they will be responsible for the tickets they’re given and I will not replace lost tickets. They can “buy” tickets with Classroom Dojo points.

5. If the students leave the room for any reason they must first ask permission, then take a hall pass and sign the “Who’s Out?” board. It is located next to the pencil sharpener at the front of the room. They must put their name, where they’re going and the time they left so that I know exactly who is gone and where. This is helpful in locating students during code red drills or checking out early.

Consequences for misbehavior

1. 1st violation: Verbal or silent warning.

2. 2nd violation: Name goes on the board as a 2nd warning and student receives silent lunch.

3. 3rd violation: Check mark is placed next to the name, contact with parent/guardian is made and the student will receive silent lunch.

4. 4th violation: A Minor Incident Report (MIR) is filled out. I’ve sttached information about our school’s behavior policy to this packet, which includes a sample MIR.

**Sometimes steps 1, 2 and 3 must be skipped and an immediate discipline referral to the office is made (for example, in cases where the student is putting themselves or others in danger).**

Rewarding good behavior

As a way to reward good behavior in my classroom I use a program called Classroom Dojo. It’s very simple, students RECEIVE points for good behavior (helping others, staying on task, participation, etc.) and LOSE points for bad behaviors (unprepared, no homework, talking out of turn, off task, etc.)

• At the end of every week, Ms. Craven will tally students’ points and record them on the Dojo point board.

• Depending on total points, students may exchange them for Dojo rewards or save up their points for another week.

• Students may NOT turn in Dojo points if they have missing work.

• It is the students’ responsibility to check their Dojo points and to ask Ms. Craven if they’d like to turn them in for a reward.

Assignments

As you can see by the chart below, the highest importance is placed on tests, classwork and projects. I don’t assign homework often-most of the material students will learn will be in my classroom so attendance and turning work in are the keys to maintaining a good grade in my class.

Assignment percentages

Projects 25% Homework 10%

Tests 20% Interactive Notebook Checks 15%

Classwork 20% Quizzes 10%

Unit Tests: each unit will close with a Unit Test. There are 9 units for 7th grade Social Studies so we will have roughly 9 tests. I will ALWAYS have a “review day” the day before a unit test.

Bellringers: these are to be completed at the beginning of class, students are to come into the room, take a bellringer sheet from the green table, open up their Interactive Notebook and copy and answer the bell ringer. Usually the bellringers are a set of questions reviewing material from the previous day. These will ultimately make up the unit review questions for the unit test.

Interactive Notebook (INB) checks: students are responsible for keeping track of their notebooks every day. They may keep their INB up-to-date by checking the class website, MY INB (which is always in my classroom), OR the missing work binder. I will have an INB check EVERY Wednesday. If, for whatever reason, we don’t have school on a Wednesday students will not have an INB check that week. Students will be required to bring their INB home Wednesday nights to obtain a parent signature in order to return them for a grade Thursday in class.

Quizzes: Students will have a quiz every Friday. These quizzes are to test the material students learned during that week. **Hint Hint** be sure to have students STUDY THEIR BELLRINGERS EVERY NIGHT!

Missing Work Rules

At the back of the classroom is my “Missing Work Station.” Here, your student will find a “Missing Work Binder,” a “Homework Excuse Binder” as well as a bright green bin.

The homework excuse binder is where the student will go to fill out a form if they’re missing an assignment. This will be kept as a record as to why the student is missing an assignment.

The missing work binder has dividers for EVERY day and contains instructions for ALL of the work we do on any given day. Each day there is a clearly marked section that says “Work to be turned in:” then there is a bulleted list of, specifically, what work needs to be turned in. Worksheets and writing prompts will be included in the binder; however, your student must schedule time to come to my class to make up any tests or quizzes they missed.

Your child will be allowed time before and after class and during my planning periods to access this binder, but it is THEIR responsibility to check the binder to see what work they need to make up for days they were absent. Students may also check the bright green “No name” bin.

As ONE more way to ensure that students are always aware of their standing in my class, I will post missing work and your child’s updated grade every single Friday on a cabinet in the front of my room. Since grades are posted every Friday, I generate a “missing work report” which lists each class period, each student’s name and the work that they’re missing as of that Friday. The list is updated every week and stays posted on the cabinet throughout the week so every Monday your child can check to see what work they’re missing. Your students’ updated grade will be posted using their student identification number. [pic]

I know that we’re going to have an amazing year and if, for any reason, you should have comments or concerns please feel free to email me at kristincraven@ccs.k12.nc.us or call the school at (910) 488-2711.

Email is a MUCH quicker way to receive a response from me but if you feel that you need to call, my planning periods are 2nd period (8:25-9:16) and 7th period (12:44-1:35) so it’s best to call then.

I look forward to working with you and your student this year!

Kristin Craven

I received this syllabus and discussed Ms. Craven’s classroom rules and procedures with my student. I understand that they must return this, signed, in order to receive their first interactive notebook grade.
