RESULTS FROM A SURVEY CONDUCTED IN OLD WEST LAS VEGAS AND NORTH LAS VEGAS

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Public Health from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as her capstone project, Shawnta Jackson administered a survey to gain insight about the desires and expectations for sex education from parents/guardians of African American (Black, nonHispanic) teens attending Clark County School District (CCSD) high schools.

The survey was administered in-person at African American-owned barbershops and beauty salons located within Las Vegas, NV, zip codes 89106, 89030, 89031 and 89032 to a total of 95 respondents--45 men and 50 women--between October 23, 2010 and November 11, 2010.

CCSD says that it has adopted an abstinence-based approach for sex education.1

CCSD has an advisory committee that advises the Superintendent, who advises the School Board of Trustees concerning sex education content and materials to be used.1

The advisory committee consists of: o Five parents o Four representatives, one from each of the four:

Medicine or nursing Counseling Religion Students who attend a CCSD school or a teacher o Non-voting male and female student

When asked what type of sex education they want their teen to receive from their CCSD high school, almost half of parents/guardians opt for abstinence-based or abstinence-only-until marriage sex education while an overwhelming majority of their responses actually indicate desires for comprehensive sex education. What do African American parents/guardians want their teens to learn during sex education classes provided by CCSD?

93.7% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to learn about available birth control options and 82.1% want their teen to receive information about how to obtain birth control.

72.6% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to learn the facts about emergency contraception also known as the morning after pill or Plan B.

98.9% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to learn the facts about how STDs and HIV are transmitted and prevented.

87.4% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to be provided with information on where to go get tested for STDs and HIV/AIDS.

72.6% of parents/guardians say they want CCSD to provide resource information about sexual and reproductive health services available to their teen, if he/she does not have a trusted adult to seek advice from.

97.9% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to learn about the realities of teen parenting.

48.4% of parents/guardians say they want their teen to learn about abortion options.

93.7% of parents/guardians say during sex education classes provided by CCSD, they want their teen to be provided information and resources regarding rape.

QUICK FACTS

As of 2008, Nevada is one of the 10 highest states for teenage birth rates for 15-19 year olds.4

In 2007, it is reported that 556 African American teenage girls gave birth in Nevada compared to 1,168 white teenage girls who's population is almost five times more than blacks.4
