WEEKLY INFLUENZA SURVEILLANCE ACTIVITY

DOUGLAS COUNTY, NEBRASKA INFLUENZA SEASON 2019-2020

Key Points:

Douglas County is currently experiencing high levels of influenza activity. Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 is the predominate circulating strain in Douglas County,

compared to influenza B/Victoria circulating in other regions of the country. Nebraska is one of 12 states experiencing high levels of influenza-like illness. Two outbreaks in long-term care (LTC) facilities have been reported. The number of RSV positive tests continues to remain high. According to the CDC, elevated influenza activity is expected to continue for weeks.

It's not too late to get vaccinated. Influenza vaccination is the best way to reduce the risk from flu and its potentially serious complications.

Douglas County: Flu activity continues to increase in Douglas County. The number of reported cases have increased over the last few weeks. Also, the current percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness (ILI), percentage of emergency department visits with ILI, percentage of hospital admissions with ILI, and percent of children absent from school due to illness have all increased in recent weeks (Table 2).

As of December 7, 609 PCR-confirmed influenza tests (552 A and 57 B) and 457 positive rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) results (409 A and 48 B) have been reported since September 29.

Two outbreaks in long-term care (LTC) facilities have been reported (CDC guidance for LTC: ). Douglas County Health Department has not received any reports of adult or pediatric deaths due to influenza this season. However, influenza-associated adult deaths are not reportable by law and may be underreported.

A total of 108 positive respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) tests were reported (of 476 tested) last week. For prophylaxis and high-risk infants and children, please consult the AAP policy statement: .
