You’ve made the right decision

You’ve made the right decision!

Congratulations!

You will soon be turning eight and will have the opportunity to be baptized. You are preparing for a very special day. We hope to be of service in making this event an outstanding highlight in your life.

We have compiled this book to help you learn the importance of the baptismal covenants you make and the promises Heavenly Father makes to you.

You are following one of Heavenly Father’s commandments and He is very pleased with you. He loves you very much.

We hope you use and enjoy this book.

With love,

The Primary Presidency

Questions You May Have Related

To Baptism

1. What do I wear to the baptism service?

Sunday clothes, WHITE underwear

2. When should I arrive?

At least 20 minutes prior to the service to pick up your baptismal clothing from Bro. Carlson in the classroom next to the kitchen. Then, you can change clothes, take pictures, and greet guests!

3. What do I need to have with me?

Towel, comb, change of dry underwear, white socks (if desired), bag to take wet clothes home

4. Who may come to see me be baptized?

Mom and Dad, brothers and sisters, Grandmas and Grandpas, aunts, uncles, friends, teachers, anyone!

5. Can I hold my nose when I go under the water?

Yes. The person baptizing you will show you how.

6. What happens if some of my hair or one of my toes doesn't go all the way under the water?

You will be immersed (put under water) a second time.

7. What promise or covenant do I make with Heavenly Father when I am baptized?

You promise that from now on you will choose the right and obey all of his commandments. You will take upon yourself the name of Christ (that is, to become one of his true followers), and always remember to do what he has taught us to do.

8. What does Heavenly Father promise me?

That his Spirit (the Holy Ghost) will always be with you. This will help you do what is right so that you can always be happy. If you do this, you can return and live with him again.

9. What does it mean to be baptized by "immersion"?

This means that your whole body is put completely under the water and then brought back up out of the water. Being under the water is a likeness of Jesus' death and burial. Being brought up out of the water is a likeness of Jesus' resurrection to a new life, and a likeness of your being born to a new, clean life of righteousness.

10. Why must I be baptized and confirmed only by a man who holds the priesthood?

A man who holds the priesthood has some of the same powers on earth that Heavenly Father and his son Jesus have. Jesus says that if a man is a priest in the Aaronic Priesthood, or holds the Melchizedek Priesthood, he has the right or authority to baptize people in Jesus' name. A man who holds the Melchizedek Priesthood has the right to confirm people members of the Church of Jesus Christ. If a man doesn't hold the priesthood, he doesn't have the right to do these special things for Heavenly Father and Jesus.

11. How shall I remember the promises I make at baptism?

By reverently partaking of the sacrament each Sunday, and by listening to prayers offered over the bread and water.

Faith in God

The faith in God program is designed to help children 8-11 years old learn and live the gospel, serve others, and use the talents Heavenly Father has given them to do many good things. As they work through the program their testimonies will grow. The goal is to increase and strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ.

The inside back cover of the Faith in God Booklet is the actual award. Please hold onto these books and keep them in a safe spot. The Bishop and primary president will sign the award when the booklet is complete, shortly before your child’s 12th birthday.

Our scout leaders and activity day leaders both understand and incorporate the Faith in God program into their activities when planning. It is a combined effort between leaders and parents to see each child completes the requirements. As parents, this is a wonderful opportunity to have one-on-one gospel-centered discussions with your child and to use it as a family home evening tool.

Preparation for Your Child’s Bishop’s Interview

Prior to your child’s interview with the Bishop, you as a parent might like to review and explain some of the basic concepts, ideas, and questions regarding general concepts of the church preparatory to their baptism.

1. Why do you want to be baptized? Discuss some of the reasons explaining that baptism is part of God’s plan through the gospel of Jesus Christ. All who follow the teachings of the church can have joy and happiness here and in the life hereafter. Remind your child that baptism is a preparatory step to returning to live with our Heavenly Father.

2. What does the 4th Article of Faith really mean? Help our child understand the importance of faith, the steps of repentance, baptism by immersion and the importance of receiving the Holy Ghost.

3. How will my baptism be performed? Explain the reason for immersion; including that Jesus himself was immersed by John the Baptist. It is important that all of our body is covered with water and is symbolic of having our sins erased, giving us the opportunity for a new beginning. Immersion can also be explained as a symbol of death and resurrection.

4. Who baptizes me? One having the priesthood authority (Aaronic). This person will say a specific prayer –“Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”

5. When am I confirmed? After the baptism, confirmation usually takes place. It is at this time that we are confirmed members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Receiving the Holy Ghost means that you have the right to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost. If you keep the commandments, the Holy Ghost will be with you all the time as your friend and companion.

6. What does it mean to be a member of the church? After you are baptized and confirmed, it will become your responsibility to keep the commandments and to be a good example. You will need to remember to be kind, reverent and honest, attend your church meetings, listen to your Bishop, parents and teachers and follow their counsel. These are just a few of the essentials to our happiness and contentment as a member of His kingdom on the earth today.

7. What does partaking of the sacrament have to do with being baptized? It is a commandment to attend Sacrament meeting. Every time we partake of the sacrament, we are renewing the covenant and promises that we made when we were baptized. Be sure and listen to the sacrament prayers and you will be reminded of the promises you have made with our Heavenly Father.

8. Who was Joseph Smith? He was the first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It would be very appropriate to go over with your child a brief history of the prophet Joseph and of his inquiring mind to find the true church. Don’t forget to tell your child something interesting about him such as = he was fond of athletics, he loved to wrestle and jump with his friends; his eyes were blue and tender; his hair was light brown and wavy; he was a special messenger of our Heavenly Father. Some of these physical traits might help your child visualize and understand he prophet more easily.

9. Who is our prophet today? President Thomas S. Monson. Pres. Monson’s counsellors are President Henry B. Eyring and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Explain to your child the importance of having a living prophet today and how vital it is to have a prophet who receives inspiration for the church on our behalf.

10. Name the current Stake President, our Bishop and his counsellors. Explain the importance of the stake and ward leaders and how important it is to follow their direction and counsel.
