Photosynthesis/Cellular Respiration
Photosynthesis Review For help, please reference pages 230-233 in your textbook. 1. Draw and label the light-dependent and light independent reactions, including all of the reactants, products, and structures. (Page 233).
2. Write the formula for photosynthesis in words. 3. Write the formula for photosynthesis in symbols.
4. What are the reactants needed for photosynthesis? 5. What are the products of photosynthesis? 6. In what part of the chloroplast does the light-dependent reaction take place? 7. In what part of the chloroplast does the light-independent reaction take place? 8. What is the role of NADPH? 9. What is the formula for glucose?
Respiration Review 1. In everyday language, what does respiration mean? 2. What does the term cellular respiration mean? 3. (Review) Where in the cell does photosynthesis take place?
4. Where in the cell does cellular respiration take place? 5. Write the equation for cellular respiration in symbols. 6. Write the equation for cellular respiration in words. 7. Draw a diagram of what happens during respiration.
8. What is the relationship between respiration and photosynthesis? (Either summarize in words or choose a diagram to draw) 9. Do autotrophs like plants use cellular respiration? 10. Explain how autotrophs and heterotrophs use cellular respiration
Autotrophs Heterotrophs
Part 2: Scenario
A student wants to determine the affect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis on Elodea (a plant). The student places one plant in a dark room with no light source ,and places another under a fluorescent light. The student uses a probe to measure the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the plant. The student hypothesized that the plant placed under the light would have a higher rate of photosynthesis than the plant placed in the dark. The table below shows the data from the experiment.
Carbon Dioxide Absorption (ppm)
Elodea under lamp 97
No light

1. Write the formula for photosynthesis, and identify the cell organelle in which it takes place
2. Why is there no carbon dioxide absorption when the plant is located in the dark?
3. During another experiment, the student found that the Elodea in the dark actually released carbon dioxide. What specific chemical process was most likely taking place, and in what organelle would this happen?
