December 2, 2019

Welcome Back! – How quickly a week can go by. It seems like we just left for the Thanksgiving break and here we are getting back to school. However, it will not be business as usual. The holiday season is upon us, and the end of the semester is at hand. It can sometimes become easy for our students to lose focus and start to slack off. This is the time when they need to have a new focus and drive toward a successful end to the semester. We only have 11 days before semester exams. Now is the time to encourage your kids to get things turned in and to finish out the semester strong. Then take time to enjoy the 2 weeks that we have off before the second semester.

Come on out and take time to enjoy the concerts and events that come along with the season. Take time to talk to your kids and ask them how they are doing, and encourage them to be their best. I truly believe that every kid at MAC is exceptional. They each have gifts and talents that they will carry into the future. Hold on tight, because December 20th will be here before we know it. Senior parents, graduation is looming ever closer. Make sure to take that time with your senior, because you can never get it back later. It is the one gift you can give yourself and your child that always fits and never needs to be returned. Happy Holidays Brahmas!

Here is all the news for the week:

SEMESTER EXAM SCHEDULE - Attached is the Fall Semester Exam Schedule. Semester exams will be held on the week of December 16th. Please make sure to share this information with you student.

SEMESTER EXAM SCHEDULE - Dear Parents/Guardians, this year, students will request Semester Exam Exemptions through their Student Skyward Access Account.  The attached “Exemption Student Handout” are the instructions students will follow to request exam exemptions.  Skyward will identify and only allow students to exempt exams they qualify.

• The exemption window will open at 6:00 a.m. on Dec 10th and close on Dec 11th at Midnight

• All Attendance corrections must be submitted and corrected with the attendance office before Dec 9th

• Students are able to exempt up to three classes, Skyward will identify to students which exams they are eligible to exempt based on grades, absences, tardies, and discipline

• Students will only be allowed to submit once; once they press the submit button further changes will not be allowed

• Students that do not submit their exemption by the deadline will not be able to exempt

Students may use their personal computer/laptop at home or cell phone to submit exemptions.  In addition, our MAC Library will be available before school, during lunches, and after school.

Attached is additional information regarding the exemption process.

CLEAR BACKPACKS – We are pleased to let you know that the majority of our students have been diligent in complying with the clear backpack policy. We thank you for you support. However, recently we have had a few backpacks that we have had to address. Please remember that students are only allowed to carry clear backpacks. Mesh backpacks, semi-transparent or other types of backpacks are not approved. They must be clear backpacks. Non-clear backpacks will be taken up. Remember, Clear Backpack, or No Backpack!

TOBACCO/THC/VAPE PRODUCTS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY – Vaping has become epidemic with our teens. It is something we address on almost a daily basis. In addition to our concern over the health risks this behavior poses, we have seen a number of students expelled for the possession or use of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the principal psychoactive ingredient in marijuana). We want to reiterate that possession or use of THC on campus will result in a recommendation for expulsion for students who are found to be vaping THC or have THC in their possession. This strong stand is imperative not only to remain compliant with state law and the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct, but also to help to deter a behavior that is endangering our students.

Regardless of personal opinions on this issue, possession and use of e-cigarettes/vaping devices remains illegal under state law for persons under 18. All devices, oils, and other paraphernalia are explicitly prohibited by the North East ISD Student Code of Conduct for students of all ages. Confiscated devices, cartridges and oils will be subject to immediate on-campus chemical testing. Students who are in possession of any item which tests positively for THC will be recommended for expulsion as such possession is a state jail felony. Note that possessing or being under the influence of any controlled substance as detailed above can also result in separate criminal penalties as determined by law enforcement.

For the safety and wellbeing of our children, please help us to reinforce the serious safety and disciplinary consequences, which can result from vaping. You can access for additional resources, which may help you to initiate this conversation with your child. Thank you for your continued collaboration as we strive to ensure the safest possible educational environment for all students.

ACTIVITIES -

MAC BASKETBALL –

GIRLS’ – Our Lady Brahmas were back on the court on November 19th, going up against Clark. Our Brahmas put up a good fight, but came up short at the final buzzer. Then on November 21st, they began play in the San Marcos Tournament. They opened play against a very tough Round Rock Westwood. Our Brahmas hung with them playing strong, but they came up short at the final buzzer. They took similar losses to College Station and San Marcos, in spite of playing some tough basketball. The tide turned, and our Lady Brahmas came back to take a 51-point win over Houston Wheatley, and a 10-point win over Houston Kinkaid! On Tuesday, right before Thanksgiving, they went up against Marshall. This was a tough battle from start to finish, with our Brahmas had the lead going into the fourth quarter. A scoring spurt by Marshall gave them the 5-point edge over our Brahmas.

Our Ladies continue to play hard and give their best. This Tuesday, December 3rd, they will go head to head with Canyon at MAC at 7:30 pm. Then on Thursday, they will begin play in the NEISD Tournament. Come on out and support our Brahmas. Go Lady Brahma Basketball!!

BOYS’ – Our Brahmas kicked off their season on Monday, November 18th, when they went up against the Holmes Huskies. Holmes is a very tough and physical team, and our Brahmas put out their best. Our Brahmas held the lead for most of the game. They endured to the end to edge out the Huskies 60 to 52. Then on Thursday, the Brahmas began play in the NEISD tournament. They began with Lewisville Flower Mound. The Brahmas put up a good fight but the win eluded them in the opener. They followed that up with a tough battle against district rival Reagan. Once again, the Brahmas put up a great fight, but they came up a little short at the final buzzer. In their third game they were up against Laredo Martin. The Brahmas came out shooting and did not back off until the final second ticked off, and they walked away with the 46 to 34 win! The Brahmas closed out the tournament against El Paso Chapin. The Brahmas made a great effort, but it was not to be, as they took the loss in their final match of the tournament. Then on Monday, November 25th, the Brahmas went up against East Central. Our Brahmas gave their all, and challenged the Hornets. However, in spite of great play on the part of our Brahmas, they took an 11-point loss. Overall, our boys are playing hard, and they will continue to do so throughout the season.

This Tuesday, December 3rd, our Brahmas will be at BAC at 5 pm to take on Marshall. Then on Thursday, they will begin play in the South San tournament. Make plans and come on out to support our Brahmas. Go Brahma Basketball!

I want to encourage you to make sure you are registered to vote. If you or your child need to register, you can get a registration card at MacArthur in the Principal’s Office. You can either send it in yourself, or turn it in, and we will make sure it is turned in for you. Go Brahma Voters!

BEHVIOR AT GAMES AND EVENTS – Recently we have had to address inappropriate behavior and comments at some of our games. I want to be very clear of the expectations and consequences.

It is okay to disagree with a call and to be a little loud when supporting our Brahmas. It is not okay to be disruptive or engage in personal attacks or confrontations with Coaches, referees, or students. Anyone causing a disturbance or verbally abusing the officials, coaches, or students will be given one warning. If the behavior continues, you will be asked to leave, or removed from the game. If the behavior is very serious or persistent (that is, it occurs on more than one occasion, it will result in the issuing of Criminal Trespass Warning, which means being barred from all events for up to two years. I would ask that you not put us in a position where this becomes necessary. Please let the coaches take care of the coaching and dealing with the officials. It is extremely important for us to model appropriate behavior at any function.

Let’s do the right thing when we support our kids. Go Brahmas!
