Title of Lesson/Unit: Creating a worm using a swept path
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) STEM Concepts Addressed: ___This lesson provides experience in designing a worm that will ultimately mate with a worm gear. It will show students how to create a helical path, which they will in turn sweep a closed profile on a cylinder. ____________________________________________________________________
Length of instruction period: __60 minutes_______
How many periods needed to implement lesson unit: ____2 - 30 min. sessions______
Grade Level(s) for use: ___First year CTE(vocational Educ. Students)________________________________________________
Objectives:
1. _Create a blank by revolving a fully defined profile about an axis. _______________________________________
2. _Create a helical path on the cylindrical surface which represents the root diameter of the worm.
3. _Create a profile and sweep it along the helical path to create the worm. ___________________________________________________________________
This lesson requires that the student draw a input shaft for a worm gear reducer using the dimensions provided by the instructor. Ultimately, this input shaft is placed in a worm gear reducer where a gear mate is then applied.
Materials: __Solidworks, pencil, and paper
___________________________________________________________
Procedures:
• Create a new part using inches as the unit of measurement.
• Select a revolved boss/base on the front plane for the first sketch.
• Draw a horizontal centerline starting at the origin point.
• Sketch the profile for the blank and fully define it using dimensions provided.
• When you are satisfied with your profile, click the sketch button off. The profile should be revolved through 360 degrees, using the centerline as the axis.
• Create a helical path to sweep the gear tooth profile along. This is done using the helix command found on the curves toolbar. The number of revolutions and total length of the helix are provided. They will use this information to determine the pitch which is a value needed to create the helix.
• Once the helical path has been generated, the student must creat a new profile to sweep along the helical path. This profile is generated using the gearing formulas for a 20-degree involute gear tooth. The profile (sketch) should be fully defined.
• Using the sweep command found on the features toolbar, the student is directed to select the path, and the the profile, to create the worm.
• Add a cosmetic thread using the cosmetic thread command found on the annotation tool bar.
• In the manager pane, select edit material so that carbon steel may be selected as the material for this part.
•
Assessment: The worm you created is a part that goes into a worm gear reducer assembly. A sheet with the necessary dimensions and gear information is provided. The students must check the finished part against the sheet provided for accuracy.
