St. Louis Science Center ZMD Program at Farragut

The St. Louis Science Center is teaching parents how to conduct science experiments with the hopes of encouraging parents to visit the science center with their children. Recently parents and children at Farragut were learning how to build a ski slope. Each team had to determine what variables, such as gravity, team work, stability, were needed to be adjusted to make the slope at the precise angle degree. It was a lot of fun and a great learning experience.

Wilkinson ECC Collects “Shoes for Haiti”

Ms. White, a teacher at Wilkinson ECC, just completed a successful “Shoes for Haiti” campaign initiated by the school’s second grade teachers. Nearly 400 pairs of shoes were collected, and proceeds from the campaign will be used for clean water/purification programs in Haiti. Great work done by a great staff!

8 Beaumont Students Inducted into NHS

On Wednesday, March 31, 2010, eight exceptional students from Beaumont High School were inducted into the prestigious National Honor Society. Parents, family, teachers, administrators, and top achieving students of all grade-levels at Beaumont gathered together to honor the achievements of Shanique Buford, Sierra Fitts, Brandee Kelly, Shaneiqua Lewis, Shameka Shelby, Christian Stanford, Kanazia Thompson, and Airyon Ward at a quaint ceremony presided by Beaumont NHS advisors Krista Germann and Lucie Coates.

SLPS Student Named Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Ashleigh Smith has been a member of Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club - Sportsman’s Park Unit for nine years.  As a junior attending Cleveland NJROTC Academy, Ashleigh enjoys coming to the Club because she feels safe and valuable.  The Club has helped her build strong social skills that allow her to communicate effectively with peers and adults. Ashleigh thinks that the Club has the power to change lives.

Ashleigh Smith participates in a variety of programs at the Club such as: SMART Girls (Sister 2 Sister), Keystone Club, Goals for Graduation, Junior Staff, and the Teen Advisory Committee.  Ashleigh is currently the President of StL Finest Keystone Club, a position that she does not take lightly.  Her positive attitude, behavior, and sense of commitment are inspirational to other teens in the Club.  Ashleigh also organizes fundraisers and service projects for Keystone.  She is currently organizing the Haiti Relief project, which is collecting summer clothes to be shipped to Haiti earthquake victims.

Ashleigh Smith’s goals include graduating from high school in May 2011 and attending college.  She plans to major in nursing so that she can assist doctors’ care for ill patients. She also wants to help medical researchers find cures for diseases that plague our world.  After completing her nursing degree Ashleigh would like to join the Navy as a nurse so she can travel all over the world and serve others.

Update on Dr. Hamid Azimiaraghi from Soldan International Studies High School

Soldan International Studies High School, on behalf of Dr. Hamid Azimiaraghi and the National "Be the Match" Bone Marrow Registry, would like to thank everyone who took part in the school's bone marrow screening drive, held on Wednesday, April 14.  Over twenty St. Louis Public Schools employees attended in order to be screened, with many more requesting information about being screened in the future.  The drive was staffed by faculty and student volunteers, all of whom signed up to be future volunteers for the national registry.  The screening drive succeeded in not only adding new names to the national registry, but in educating students and faculty members about the need for donors of all ethnicities.  Anyone interested in being a possible donor is encouraged to sign up online by registering with the "Be the Match" registry at .  Interested individuals should then click on the "Join Online" link, enter their personal information, and enter the Promo Code "Eagle Scout."  Additional information can be found at .

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training to be offered at Nottingham CAJT Community Education Center Full Service School

On Tuesday, April 20, Nottingham CAJT High School’s Community Education Program, with assistance and support from numerous community agencies, will begin a CERT Course for SLPS employees, students and interested community members. The course will be approximately 20 hours of classroom instruction and include practical exercises and simulated disaster scenarios. The course is free but registration is required. Herzog PTO Hosting Career Fair & Searching for Volunteers

The Herzog Parent Teacher Organization is organizing a career fair. The theme is “This Could Be You: Career Preview”, and will introduce students in preschool through sixth grades to various opportunities and careers. The career fair is scheduled for Friday, April 23, 2010, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Herzog Pilot School, 5831 Pamplin Place.

ThurtenE Carnival 2010

Saturday, April 24th and Sunday, April 25th from 11AM to 8PM

Held on the Washington University Campus, this Wash U. student-run carnival will be raising money for the Family Resource Center. Come enjoy games, food, performances, and rides.

Cleveland’s Annual Pass & Review Ceremony

Cleveland will have its annual Pass-In-Review Ceremony on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at approximately 12:40PM, on the Field of Gateway Middle School, 1200 N. Jefferson.

Gateway Idol Round 5

There are 15 contestants remaining! Gateway Elementary and Middle Schools are once again competing in the coveted Gateway Idol Competition. The next round will be held April 29th!

Law Day 2010

The Saint Louis University Law School Student Bar Association and Optimist International are co-sponsoring a Law Day 2010 event for local middle and high school students on Thursday, April 29, 2010, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in SLU's William H. Kniep Courtroom. Local middle and high school students are invited to learn about and appreciate the emerging challenges and enduring traditions of law in the 21st century, watch a mock trial, and hear from real attorneys, judges, and law students. Ready Readers to Host St. Louis Reads Day at Stix Elementary

May 14th is "St. Louis Reads" Day! On May 14, Ready Readers will discuss with preschool children the importance of reading and distribute a copy of Curious George Visits the Library to every child attending the 43 Early Childhood Education Programs in the St. Louis Public Schools.

At 9:30 am, "St. Louis Reads" day will begin with Curious George, the Man with the Yellow Hat and volunteers arriving at the first preschool, Stix Early Childhood Center, 647 Tower Grove Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63110. They will be driving a truck filled with 1500 copies of Curious George Visits the Library to be read by a Ready Reader. Inside each copy distributed to students will be a bookmark inside each book describing the St. Louis Public Library summer reading programs.

“Curious George” and “the Man with the Yellow Hat” will visit each classroom and distribute a book to each child. After the opening event, volunteers will distribute the remaining books to the children in the other 42 preschools.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships is May 14. 

In a scholarship named for the first African American to walk in space, former astronaut Bernard Harris is encouraging minority students to pursue college degrees and careers in STEM fields through a partnership with the Council of Greater City Schools.

Four scholarships -two males and two females -- $5,000 each -- will be awarded to two African American and two Hispanic students.  Here's the link to the scholarship program and the application:

Now Available: 2010 NBMBAA-St. Louis Chapter Minority Scholarship Applications

The National Black MBA Association's Scholarship Program has been in existence since 1983.  The National office awards scholarships to outstanding minority students pursuing undergraduate and graduate management/business degrees, while demonstrating strong leadership abilities and a commitment to their communities.  

As well, the St. Louis Chapter provides several scholarship opportunities to high school, undergraduate and graduate students each year.  Since our inception, the St. Louis Chapter has awarded over $300,000 in scholarships.  Students are selected based on academic merit, presentation and a written essay.  The awards range from $1,000 - $4,500.
