Administrative Responsibilities: Executive oversight of the College of Education, which includes four multi-disciplinary Departments, over70 programs at the undergraduate, graduate, master’s and doctoral levels, 135 full-time faculty and staff, and 4,000 students. Responsible for strategic development of the College, budget and grant administration, development and outreach, support for teaching and research, and all personnel matters.

Administrative Responsibilities: Served as President of the Faculty Senate, AFUM Executive Board, Provost’s Advisory Council, NCATE and NEASC re-accreditation teams, Provost’s Council, Dean’s Advisory Council, chaired of graduate admissions in Educational Leadership.

Teaching and Research: Taught and conducted research in a thriving graduate program, offering masters’, CAS (Certificate of Advanced Study) and doctoral degrees, offered in both cohort and traditional models. Areas of specialty included School Law, Policy Analysis, Social Context of Education, Organizational Behavior, The Principalship, School Finance, and Educational Research. I advised students at the master’s, CAS, and doctoral levels, including supervising students in research and chairing doctoral committees; provided service to the university and to schools in the state, particularly in the area of school law; and conducted research on contemporary educational legal issues, social justice, and gender.

1994-1997 School Administrator

Capistrano Unified School District, California

Capistrano Unified is one of the largest school districts in California, with a complex organizational structure and a diverse student population. I was hired to plan, open, and later serve as principal for the first performing arts elementary school in the state, with 1,300 students representing over 40 primary languages. In this role I oversaw the construction and development of this 35 million dollar facility, hired the entire faculty and staff, and worked with them to develop an innovative, holistic curriculum. I also served on the district’s accreditation team and the expulsion review committee; wrote and received a grant to provide laptops to students; and received the school board’s “Extra Mile” Award (1997) for designing and implementing an effective program for children with behavior disorders.

1994-1995 Visiting Instructor

California State University, San Marcos, California

Taught introductory educational leadership classes in the College of Education; supervised student teachers; and designed and led distance conferencing between Cal State and North San Diego County schools – a model of collaboration that has won acclaim across the country.

1991-1994 School Administrator

Cartersville City Schools, Georgia

Provided leadership for a large, innovative, racially diverse school in the Atlanta metropolitan area that, under my leadership, was named a 1994 Georgia School of Excellence. Wrote and secured a Kellogg grant to bring scientists into the classroom; wrote the nomination for the teacher who won the national Sallie Mae First Year Teacher of the Year award; led technology upgrades in this model technology school; responsibilities included coordinating curriculum, planning and conducting staff development, scheduling, budget, and personnel evaluation. I was also the district administrator for crisis preparedness and technology.

Designed and conducted training and support in teacher evaluation for school principals, statewide.

Campaign announced in 1998 and completed within two years; Buchanan Alumni House constructed and officially opened 2002. Among other gifts solicited and secured, I asked for and closed the $1,000,000 naming gift for the project.

This technology/performing arts magnet school in California had its own charitable foundation, which I established. This 501.c.3 organization raised over $100,000.00, and the Foundation is still growing.
