Course Description: this course is to give the experienced Explosive Detection Dog Handler a basic level of knowledge in police dog training so that they can go back to their agency and conduct maintenance training with their explosive detection dog teams. The student will be required to attend the course with his/her K-9, or attend with a K-9 team from their given agency. The student attending the course will need to be an explosive detection dog handler for at least (3) three years and have a good knowledge of training explosive detection dogs.

• EOD K-9 Odor Evaluation

• Understanding Explosive Training Aids

• Proper Setup for Explosive Training Aids

• Search Patterns

• Air Currents

• Safety when dealing with and transporting Explosive Training Aids

• Understanding Threshold Amounts

• Understanding Time Threshold

• EOD K-9 emergency first aid

• Working EOD K-9 in Commercial Vehicle Searches

• EOD K-9 in Building Search Problems

• Increasing the EOD K-9’s Search Time Threshold

• Proper Search Procedures on and off Leash

• Writing a Resume for the Explosive Detection K-9

• Legal Aspects for the EOD K-9 Team

• Proper EOD K-9 documentation for the instructor

• Review and prepare for the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) NORT Test

• Importance of National Explosive Detection K-9 Certification (International Police Work Dog Association).

Class size: Class size will be a maximum of twelve (12) teams or students. The course will provide all books and handouts as well as Community College Education Credits of Fifty (50) Hours. This course is a perfect opportunity for K-9 handlers who are working on their International Police Work Dog Association Trainer or Master Trainer Accreditation (Obtain Critique Hours). There is NO COST for North Carolina Students as well as (In State Military Students). Out of state students will be assessed a one hundred twenty dollars ($120.00) tuition fee (cash no out of state checks).

Course Instructor:

Lieutenant Tim Loughman is the Supervisor / Trainer for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and has been involved with police work dogs since 1991. He handles an explosive detection K-9 and supervises six-(6) full time police K9 teams. He’s also responsible for covering explosive detection needs for ninety-(90) public schools in his jurisdiction. He specializes in Explosive Detection K-9’s and is a Nationally Certified Police K-9 Master Trainer (judge) in Explosive Detection through the International Police Work Dog Association as well as a certified North Carolina Criminal Justice Instructor. Lieutenant Loughman is the State Examiner for the North Carolina Explosive Detection Canine Task Force and is a graduate from two Nationally Accredited Explosive Detection K-9 Academies, and is certified as an Explosive Detection K-9 Instructor through them. Lieutenant Loughman is also a graduate from the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives Explosive Detection K-9 Evaluators Course and is Certified ATF Explosive K-9 Evaluator. Currently Lieutenant Loughman is the senior police K9 instructor for Fayetteville Technical Community College Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is an active member of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad.

• How to teach the handler to testify in court reference to the EOD K9
