Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) Doctoral Program: The CES Doctoral Program is planned, in part, to help develop leaders in the profession of counseling. As a result, educational requirements for a psychology license are not to be met while pursuing a Ph.D. degree in the CES Doctoral Program. Your signature on the Advisory Phase Committee Form signifies your willingness to not work toward a license in psychology while in the CES Doctoral Program. The goal of the CES Doctoral Program is to prepare people who desire to have the professional identity of a counselor. Also, if students have not previously completed the required coursework set forth by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board for Professional Counselor licensure, they will complete such coursework as part of their CES doctoral program.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING DIVERSITY: The Counselor Education and Supervision program at Kent State University has diversity as a core value and diversity is integrated throughout the curriculum. As a student in the program, you will be expected to work with and affirm fellow students and clients who may be sexual minorities, who are of different races, ethnicities and religions, and who come from varying socio-economic statuses.  The experience will challenge you, and you will need to be open to new ways of encountering people. The program faculty, staff and supervisors will be there for support in this journey. By signing this prospectus you are embracing this approach to diversity as the core of your professional identity.

CURRICULAR NOTES

• Note 1: Approved Master’s and Doctoral coursework must total a minimum of 104 hours (not including accrued hours for dissertation). CACREP & CORE accredited master's coursework and related master’s work is counted in this requirement.

• Note 2: Students must complete a minimum of 42 hours of coursework (not including accrued hours for dissertation) from KSU, while in the CES Doctoral Program. Therefore, advisors may waive required CES courses as a result of this policy as long as the student accrued at least 42 hours of CES coursework (not including hours accrued for dissertation). For example, the 15 credit hour requirement in the “Additional Courses Required Relative to Major Area of Study” area may be reduced to 12 hours if the student took an advisor approved 3 credit hour course outside of his/her master’s program requirements prior to admissions to the doctoral program.

• Note 3: At times, students take coursework in their master’s degree program that is also part of the doctoral program. For example, KSU master’s students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program are required to take Individual Clinical Assessment in Counseling. This course is also a requirement of the CES doctoral program and contains both Clinical Mental Health Counseling CACREP standards and doctoral level CACREP standards. At the master’s level, students do not have to complete assignments pertaining to the doctoral level CACREP standards. In cases where master’s graduates are admitted to the CES doctoral program, they can “make up” doctoral level CACREP standards via independent study per advisor approval (e.g., one credit individual investigation in the elective category titled “Additional Courses Required Relative to Major Area of Study”) and in the above example, the requirement for Clinical Assessment in Counseling may then be waived.

• Note 4: The total number of clinical hours accrued during CES 87392 or CES 78592 must total a minimum of 100 total hours, including a minimum of 40 hours of direct service to clients.

• Note 5: Any changes made to coursework (including specialization / elective coursework) must be approved by the student’s advisors BEFORE the change is made.

• Note 6: Before starting CES 88292: Internship in CES students must have no more than nine (9) hours of coursework remaining, which could include only the following: advisor approved electives; independent investigations; advanced EVAL coursework (e.g., EVAL 85517 or EVAL 85518); and/or CES 88281: Research Seminar in CES.

• Note 7: Beginning with fall 2017 admits, doctoral interns must include THREE of following areas in their internship plans: Teaching, Research & Scholarship, Counseling, Leadership, and Supervision. See the internship manual (dated August 2017 or later) for details.

GRADUATE COURSES COMPLETED IN MAJOR PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO DOCTORAL STUDY. Include master's coursework. "Previous" coursework must meet all entry level "master's" standards of CACREP: professional identity, social and cultural diversity, human growth and development, career development, helping relationships, group work, assessment, research and program evaluation, practicum, and internship.
