Web Curriculum

Canadian Institute of Financial Planning This document is the revised Certified Financial PlannerTM Program (Web) curriculum, detailing the contents of the program and courses. Outlines for Retirement Planning (201) and Income Tax Planning (202) are current as of this date and have been signed off. The outlines for the other courses are still subject to minor changes. This document presents the size, scope and overall sequence of the content to be designed and delivered.

Introductory Courses

CFPTM Program

Learning on the Web for Students (Pre-program unit, optional)

This unit prepares students for taking a course on the Web. It teaches them the skills they need to navigate and use the courseware as well as giving them a sense of how learning is different in a Web environment, and how best to work within this new medium.

Technical use

Perform technical tasks such as navigating, and using the available tools. Interface: all the "how to's" such as:

? Navigation: surfing and "Where am I?" ? Take Notes ? Printing ? Interactive exercises ? Search ? Test, self-assessments and reflection exercises Review

Conceptual framework

Course 101: Financial Planning Principles Financial Planning Principles provides an overview of financial planning. It is intended as a basis for understanding the financial planning process; a foundation upon which the financial planning courses depend.

We start with an overview of personal financial planning concepts followed by a detailed explanation of the five-step comprehensive financial planning process. Finally, we examine the concept of due diligence: its importance to the financial advisor and the client as well as the steps that are needed to implement the due diligence process.

CFPTM Program: Core Courses

Course 201: Retirement Planning This course provides a detailed look at how client's plan for retirement, how they use their financial assets during retirement, and how they make financial decisions related to retirement. Clients look to their personal financial planners to provide expert guidance on the many issues involved in retirement planning. This requires the planner to acquire the knowledge, judgement, and expertise to understand the retirement planning process, the various private and government pension arrangements, investment products for retirement, any income tax implications, and numerous strategies.

The course starts out with an overview of retirement planning followed by a detailed look at pensions. It then examines the characteristics of registered retirement savings plans to understand how they are used in accumulating funds for retirement. It then explores the taxation of retirement income along with the tax planning opportunities that are available.

Then, it looks at retirement decision and investment planning. Finally, it examines case situations involving retirement planning. Each unit contains:

Course 202: Income Tax Planning This course provides a detailed look at how business and financial assets are used to acquire and preserve wealth. Clients look to their personal financial planners to provide expert guidance on the many issues involved in managing their business and investment assets. This requires the planner to acquire the knowledge, judgement, and expertise to understand the economic issues, business activities, investment products, any income tax implications, and numerous strategies.

The course examines how various business forms (including proprietorships, partnerships and corporations) are structured and taxed, and how they can be used to generate wealth for the owner/manager or the passive investor. It reviews the taxation of employment income and benefits with an emphasis on looking for ways to increase an individual's compensation without necessarily increasing the individual's taxable income. It then explores the taxation of investment income, including property income (interest, dividends and rents) and capital gains, and reviews the important deductions available for various income sources. This is followed by a discussion of how an individual can make use of the different tax advantages available to maximize his or her wealth accumulation.

Course 203: Strategic Investment Planning Clients look to their personal financial planners to provide expert guidance on the many issues involved in investment planning. This requires the planner to acquire the knowledge, judgement, and expertise to understand the investment planning process, the various investment products, any income tax implications, and numerous strategies.

This course provides a detailed look at the investment products that individuals use to achieve wealth accumulation objectives. It also presents the framework of Strategic Investment Planning, which provides the personal financial planner with a method to design or evaluate a client's investment portfolio.

The course starts with an overview of Strategic Investment Planning. Then examines financial securities including T-bills, bonds, equities, and financial derivatives. It then looks at mutual funds, real estate limited partnerships, real estate investment trusts, oil and gas investments, film deals, labour-sponsored investment funds, and mutual fund limited partnerships.
