Short Essay Questions (answer all essay questions in complete sentences. Define all psychological terms that you use. Use at least 6 sentences per question)

1. Some of your students may be at risk for academic failure; if they do fail, they are apt to be ill-equipped to become productive citizens in the adult world. With the typical characteristics of students at risk in mind, identify five strategies you might use to help such students succeed at school. For each one, describe what you would do in specific and concrete terms.

2. Discuss how you believe your gender and/or ethnic status effected how you were treated in school. In what ways did your status give you an advantage? In what ways was your status a disadvantage? What strategies will you use in your classroom to minimize ethnic and gender bias?

Chapter 4 Objectives:

1. Describe two important points one should keep in mind whenever one hears or reads that one group has “more” or “less” of a characteristic than another.

2. Explain what a cultural mismatch is and why it may hamper children’s academic and social success at school.

3. Describe at least five different ways in which children’s behaviors or beliefs might reflect their cultural or ethnic background.

4. Describe and illustrate at least five strategies a teacher might use to meet the diverse needs of a multicultural population of students.

5. Describe how males and females are likely to be similar and different, and explain how gender differences are often the result of an interaction between heredity and environment.

6. Identify strategies for maximizing classroom achievement in both girls and boys.

7. List unique needs that children from low-income families often have, and explain how a teacher can help these children attain academic and social success in the classroom.

8. Describe common characteristics of children who are at risk of failing to acquire basic academic skills, and identify strategies for helping them learn successfully.
