How To Pronounce /ch/

There are 3 different ways to pronounce the sound /ch/ in English -- hard /ch/, hard /k/, and soft /sh/.

The rules associated with the pronunciation of `ch' in English is not extremely clear. There are many exceptions to the rules but for the most part, here is how to tell which sound to pronounce. 1. Hard /ch/ Words originating from the Germanic language are pronounced with the hard /ch/. The majority of English words spelled with `ch' are pronounced this way. Examples: church, match, choice, cheer, arch, achieve, chief, and children.

2. Hard /k/ When an `h' is between a `c' and a soft vowel (e,i,y) then the `ch' combination is pronounced as /k/. These words usually have Greek origin. Examples: architecture, ache, scheme, anarchist, archive, catechism, schism. *

3. Soft /sh/ Word that originate from the French language that have come into our language within the last 100 years are pronounced with soft /sh/. Examples: parachute, charade, machine, nonchalant. * However, some words with French origin that have been a part of the English language for longer than 100 years have been hardened. Such as: Bachelor, channel, charm, charity. This /sh/ sound is also used in `loan' words from other languages such as machete (from Spanish) and pistachio (from Italian). * See additional worksheet for more examples.
