I can solve real life math problems by completing a checkbook challenge for a month’s work of transactions that incorporates various math skills, vocabulary, utilizes a rubric and a written response that carefully explains how I completed task and an evaluation of challenges I encountered.

Task: You will complete a balance sheet and write checks for financial transactions. You will also write a written response to this assignment that incorporates all of the math vocabulary. In the written response, discuss the steps you used in completing the task. Discuss what was easy and challenging and anything that might have surprised you.

Required Skills:

Vocabulary:

• Transaction: Exchange, the act of spending or earning money

• Debit: Money owed or spent

• Credit: Money earned or gained

• Balance: The total or difference after debit and credit transactions

• Balance sheet: A sheet that helps you keep records of financial transactions

• Sales tax: Tax added on the purchase price of items you buy (you will use a 5% sales tax for this assignment.

• Statement: A record that the bank sends you that shows all your transactions for one month.

• Check: a written order instructing a bank to pay out money to a person or business.
