1_Introduction to Microsoft_Publisher 2003

Welcome to part 1 of the My Place, My Space ICT tutorial for Desktop Publishing.

The aim of this instructional video is to introduce you to the different features that are available in Microsoft Publisher 2003.

We will introduce the basic functionality of the software by taking you through the creation of the ‘Great Day Out in Bangor’ brochure included in the site. We will show you how to create a blank document, add pages, import and place images and insert text boxes.

When you open up the application you will see a ‘New Publications’ task pane on the left hand side which includes 'New from a Design’, 'New' or ‘Open' options.

If you would like to create a publication using a default template then select ‘Create a New Publication from a Design’. Publisher has a range of handy template documents which contain pages of dummy text and graphics - all you need to do is type in your own text and replace the pictures.

But if you, like us, want to create your own layout, then you need to create a new blank publication.

2_Creating a Blank Publication

Select the blank page icon from the toolbar or the 'Blank Print Publication' option from the task pane.

Next we need to choose the type of publication.

Select ‘File’ and scroll down to the ‘Page setup’ option; this opens up the 'Page Setup Inspector Window' which lists different types of documents. For our brochure we chose the booklet format.

Now we have a blank document containing four pages.

We want to create an eight page brochure, so we must select the ‘Insert’ menu and choose the ‘Insert Page’ option.

[pic]

This brings up the 'Insert Page Inspector Window’; just enter the amount of pages you want to add, in our case we want to add another four pages.

[pic]

Now we have eight pages, a front and back cover page and six content pages.

Select the front page. Now, we will create the cover for our brochure.

3_Importing and adding an image to your publication

To add an image to the page, select 'Insert' and scroll down to the 'Picture' option and click on 'From File'.

[pic]

This allows you to import a picture saved on to your computer, just navigate to the correct folder and select the correct file name. You may need to resize the picture to fit into your design, so just click on the picture and use the handles on the dashed outline to move or scale the picture to its desired location.

4_Creating a banner with a logo

Now, we need to draw a rectangle. Select the 'Rectangle Icon' from the tool bar. Position the mouse on the page where you want the corner of the rectangle to be, then click and drag to expand your rectangle shape. You can reposition or resize this rectangle using the handles on the dashed outline.

[pic]

Now, you need to fill the rectangle. Select the paint pot icon from the top toolbar, this is your 'Fill Colour' tool.

[pic]

Now we are ready to place our logo. Select the 'Insert' menu and choose 'Picture' and 'From File' as before.

You can resize and reposition the logo using the handles on the dashed outline as before. Hold the 'Shift key' down while dragging the handles to maintain the aspect ratio of the image.

5_Adding Text Boxes

Next we want to add some text. Select the 'Text Box' tool from the left hand side toolbar.

[pic]

Again we need to position the mouse on the page where we want the corner of the text box to be, then we click and drag to expand the text box. Don't worry if the text box is too small it can be resized later. The text in this text box is preset with 10 point Times New Roman.

We want to change the size and style of the font to reflect the fun nature of our publication. We need to click on the drop down arrow beside the default 'Times New Roman' font in the text toolbar to scroll through our options and select the new font.

Next we want to change the default font size. We need to click on the drop down arrow beside the default 10 in the text toolbar to scroll through our options and select our new font size.

[pic]

We also need to change the colour of the font. Select the text in the text box and then click on the font colour tool from the text toolbar and select the appropriate colour.

7_Finishing Touches

We just need to add another text box to complete our layout, just select the text tool, click and drag as before. Choose the appropriate font style, size and colour and type in our introductory sentence. Once we're happy with the position of all the elements, that's our cover completed.
