November 2012 Newsletter

From the Superintendent – Andy Siegfried

Flu Precautions:

Your school district is taking a cautious and common sense approach to what health officials are predicting will be a very active flu season.

COVER – your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

CLEAN – wash hands frequently during the day

CONTAIN – stay home if sick.

Remember, COVER-CLEAN-CONTAIN!

Emergency Closing Information:

If there is ever a need to close school or to deliver important health information, you will be contacted directly by our Parent Emergency Notification System. Make sure our school secretaries have your current phone numbers and other additional contact information. I would suggest having your personal cell phone as your main number if possible. You may also choose to visit our school district website, chaneymonge.us, or or for more on-line information at any time.

Please remember that in the event of an emergency release, the 1st phone call made will be the home phone number listed on your child’s registration form. If we cannot reach a parent or family member your student will remain here at the school at the time students are released. The 2nd and subsequent phone calls will be made to cell phone numbers, work numbers, and emergency contacts.

Emergency Weather School Closings:

You receive a “school closed” call from our school district parent emergency notification system. You can also utilize the media outlets below or see a notice on our school district website. Do not call the school district numbers since there will probably be no one available to answer your call. Instead, tune in or type in any of the media outlets listed below.

Supplemental Education Services – SES

During the recent parent teacher conferences, a packet of information explaining the SES program was distributed to the parents of children in grades K through 5 who are receiving free or reduced price meals. Due to the fact that ISAT scores in reading and math for some grade levels during the past few years have fallen short of NCLB expectations, the District must offer SES to students. The packets explain everything including how to go about selecting the providers and the programs that are available. However, unless the district receives a completed application by the due date listed on the parent letter, your child will not be eligible for consideration. Parents should be aware that only 20-25 students will be selected based on academic needs in reading and math. I strongly encourage parents to visit the websites listed in the provider packet for up-to-date information.

WATER MAIN BREAK

On October 18th at around 7:30 am there was a major water main break behind the school. The water department worked to repair the problem, eventually needing to shut off the water to the school as the scope of the repair increased. Students were served lunch and dismissal was at 11:45 am. If we were unable to contact a parent we kept the student at school until the regular dismissal time. We had several staff members who helped in making the 465 plus calls.

Thank you to the City of Crest Hill for their excellent communications and quick and diligent repairs. The parent notification system and individual parent contacts were used to ensure safety of each student. I did post the early out with the TV and radio stations and the City of Crest Hill sent out an alert with our early dismissal as well. Whenever you go through an experience where you have to cancel school last minute you learn from the experience. I appreciate everyone’s patience and help with the situation.

From the Principal – Jackie Hall
