NO. 99-13

TO

: Customhouse Brokers, Importers and Others Concerned

SUBJECT: Port of Chicago Centralized Examination Station Applications

The purpose of this pipeline is to inform the Trade Community of the applications received from interested parties to be considered as Centralized Examination Stations in the Port of Chicago, and to invite the public to submit comments concerning the applications.

The Centralized Examination Station (CES) regulatory requirements set forth in 19 CFR 118, Code of Federal Regulations, establish guidelines for solicitation of applicants and selection of CES's. Port of Chicago's Pipeline 99-10, dated February 26, 1999, advised the local trade community of the reopening of the CES selection process. Applications were received from nine (9) interested parties. Following the 60-day "open season" for submission of applications, which ended April 30, 1999, the regulations call for public notification of the applications received and the invitation of comments from the public.

Those parties wishing to submit written comments relevant to the CES applicants (attached) must submit their comments by June 30, 1999. Based on a review of the applications and public comments, the Customs Service will select the applicants that best meet the examination needs of Customs and facilitation needs associated with imported cargo.

Comments should be addressed to:

U.S. Customs Service

2571 Busse Road, Suite 306 Elk Grove Village, Illinois 60007 ATTN: CES Coordinator

Any questions regarding the comment process should be addressed to Carl Ambroson, Chief Inspector, Cargo Operations, at (847) 616-4060 ext. 183.

Anita Terry-McDonald (Acting) Port Director
