ANALYZING AND INTERPRETING DATA

A. Refer to the map in World View ("Agricultural Employment") for questions 1?5 and the map in Snapshot of America ("Guns in School") for questions 6?10.

1. Where in the world are the highest percentage (that is, over 70%) of people employed in agriculture?

2. Which countries have the lowest percentage (that is, below 10%)?

3. Worldwide, about what percentage of people are employed in agriculture?

4. In Mexico, what percentage of people are employed in agriculture?

5. Why do you think such a small percentage of people are employed in agriculture in the United States?

6. Which states reported the highest numbers of gun-related expulsions during the 1998?1999 school year?

7. Where does your state rank in the data for gun-related school expulsions? What about the states that neighbor you own?

8. Look at the states shaded yellow, the 5.1?10.0 category. What is the range of actual numbers of expulsions per 100,000 students in this category?

9. Locate South Dakota. How many students per 100,000 were expelled for gun violations?

10. Look at the states that border South Dakota. Record the differences in the data between those states and South Dakota.

B. Refer to Snapshot of America, "Gun Control" (Chapter 3) for questions 1?2. 1. How do South Dakota and its neighbors differ in this data?

2. What other correlation(s) do you see between the right to carry concealed guns and the number of students expelled for bringing guns to school?

3. Review positive and negative correlations in Chapter 2. Is there any easily observed correlation in the states you observed for question 3, above? Graph the correlation you observe.

4. A mean score is determined by adding all the numbers in a set of data and dividing the total by the number of addends. Find the mean for the six states in the 15.1?25.0 category.

5. Research the number of gun-related expulsions in your own district, city, or county. Does your data match the data for the rest of your state? If not, is it below the state average or above? What factors in your district, city, or county may be responsible for this difference?
