A Voice Crying In The WildernessHope Chapel HonoluluLuke 3:1-3815 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” 18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.(Luke 3:15-20, ESV)IntroductionWe begin a year-long journey through The Gospel of Luke and The Book of Acts, expecting the Word and Spirit of God to reveal and remind us of the grace and truth of God first seen in Jesus Christ, reflected in the lives of those eyewitnesses of Christ, and then in and through the words, works and relationships of those men and women who believed without having seen Christ with their own eyes (John 20:29). While the first two chapters of Luke do contain important truth for us about Christ, because we considered Christ’s birth from Luke’s Gospel at Christmas just a few weeks ago, we begin here with Luke 3:1-38.1. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. (Luke 3:1-14)a) John and the baptism of repentance.b) The content and significance of John’s message of baptism and repentance.2. The baptism of Jesus, the voice of the Father and the appearance of the Holy Spirit. (Luke 3:15-22)a) John baptized with water, Christ baptizes with the Holy Spirit and fire.b) Jesus’ baptism and the theophanies of Father and Holy Spirit.3. Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Man. (Luke 3:23-38)a) Christ began with the approval of God and man before His public ministry began.b) Christ is the seed of the woman prophesied of in Genesis 3:15.ConclusionThrough the Gospel of Luke I will share with you of where I learned both personal rhythms of worship, discipleship and witness—renewal, prayer, witness, submission and sabbath—as well as corporate rhythms—celebration, connection and commission from Christ and His disciples. These rhythms give context to learn and practice the content of the apostolic teachings--repentance from acts that lead to death and faith in God, teachings of baptisms and the laying of hands, of the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment—and how God works in and through all these things to accomplish His good, pleasing and perfect will in our lives! For our prayerful study, discussion and application:1) Read Luke 3:7-14. Who came to be baptized by John and what was required of them?2) Read Luke 3:21-22. What was the significance of Christ’s baptism?3) What are the Word and Spirit of God telling you about repentance, faith and baptism here?011021cdg@hch ................
