The Great Gatsby - Character Analysis Essay (190 pts)
Objectives: Students will work with analyzing the significance of quotations.
Students will learn how to incorporate quotations into a paper successfully.
Students will develop a mastery of characterization.
Students will write a paper dealing with character and theme development.
Students will learn MLA format and practice following the rules of grammar.
Students will incorporate primary and secondary sources into a literary analysis paper.
Assignment: Pick one major character from The Great Gatsby. Write a 5 paragraph essay that analyzes that character based on how he/she illustrates a major theme in the book.
Process: 1) Pick a character and create a Thesis: pick a character & figure out
what theme he/she best represents and why. State that in 1-2 sentences on Due on 10/20 (5pts)
a blank piece of paper.
2) Create Topic Sentences for 3 body paragraphs In Class on 10/20
3) Short Outline with Quotes: Write a brief outline that shows where each Due on 10/21 (10 pts)
quote will go in your paper. (bring 2 copies to class)
4) Explain Quotations: Using the Quote Commentary worksheet, Due on 10/23 (10pts)
pick 1 good quotation from the text. Write it down. Explain why it is
important to your paper in 4 sentences. Then write out a quote for the 2nd
and 3rd body paragraph
5) Write a body paragraph using a primary source quotation: we will do this in Due on 10/23 (10pts)
Class and you will turn it in before you leave.
6) Works Cited page: draft a hand written Works Cited page to be turned into a
Typed copy with final draft of paper. In Class on 10/23
7) Introduction and Conclusion: Begin writing an introduction following the In Class on 10/24
inverted pyramid format and a conclusion following the pyramid format
8) Write a Rough Draft: Type and print a rough draft that includes
an introduction, at least 2 body par.(with primary source quotations), Due on 10/28 (40pts)
and conclusion
7) Write a Final Paper: 5 paragraphs with primary source and sec. source
quotation in each body paragraph. Also include a works cited page. Print Due on 11/3 (115 pts)
final copy and bring to class.
8) Submit paper to : paper WILL NOT BE GRADED (0/100)
if you do not do this. Due 11/3
