AP English Literature & CompositionSummer Assignment 2019Dear Student,According to the guidance department you are enrolled in AP English Literature and Composition. This course has high standards and expectations, and one of those expectations is that of summer reading. This year students are only asked to read 1 book: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book will serve as a primer for the AP course and the skills that the class will encompass. Students are asked to read and annotate the novel. (The annotations will not be graded). In addition, each student will respond to the attached questions. This work is due on Monday, September 9th, but will be accepted for credit until Monday, September 16th. This assignment will be graded as 50 assignment points. In addition to the questions, attached you will find lecture notes detailing useful information to provide context to the novel before you begin reading. In addition to this, you will also find a timeline of Afghan history relevant to The Kite Runner, information about narrative techniques and devices used throughout the novel. The short responses you are asked to complete will let you practice your literary analysis and will help me get to know you are a writer. Please note that your responses should be paragraphs -- not pages!Even though this is analytical writing, you may use "I" if you deem it important to do so; remember, however, that most uses of "I" are just padding. For example, "I think The Great Gatsby is the greatest book ever'" is padded. (No need for “I think” – take it out and the statement gains strength.) As you compose each written response, re-phrase the prompt as part of your answer. In other words, I should be able to tell which question you are answering without referring back to the prompts. If you have questions, you may email me over the summer, elizabeth.mcclain@smyrna.k12.de.us. I look forward to having you in class next year!!Sincerely, Elizabeth McClainElizabeth.mcclain@smyrna.k12.de.us(302) 653-8581AP Literature and Composition Summer Assignment:The Kite RunnerDirections: In addition to reading and annotating the text, choose 4 of the following free response questions to answer after reading The Kite Runner. Your answers should address the prompt completely and adequately (minimum 1-2 paragraphs). Do not merely summarize the plot of the novel, but focus on how each of elements addressed in the questions contribute to meaning. The physical description of a literary character often helps the reader understand that character’s motivations and personality. Analyze Hosseini’s description of one of his characters’ faces and discuss how these descriptions contribute to the reader’s understanding of that character. Do not merely provide a character description.A character’s search for redemption is a common theme in world literature. Analyze Hosseini’s development of this theme in The Kite Runner and discuss how it controls the plot, the characters, and the structure of the novel. The plots of many novels and plays rely on coincidence to tie up loose ends in the resolution. Analyze Hosseini’s use of coincidence in The Kite Runner, and discuss the effectiveness of this strategy in bringing the novel to satisfactory closure. Authors often provide elaborate details of foreign or historic cultures in order to establish setting and characterization. Analyze Hosseini’s use of the details of the Afghan culture in The Kite Runner and the effect these details have on the setting, characterization, and overall meaning of the novel.A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works, authors use symbols to express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literary meaning. Choose one symbol in The Kite Runner and analyze how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about characters or themes of the work as a whole. In many works of literature, past events can affect, positively or negatively, the present actions, attitudes, or values of a character. Choose a character from The Kite Runner and explain how that character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal and describe how the character’s relationship with the past contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole. ................
