Character Development Project Report Name: Zack Morse

Identify the strategy you used for character development:

I used a class meeting to help talk to the first and second graders about their behavior in the previous classes. Because they are talking and not listening to directions students were wasting most of their class time and we didn’t have enough time to get to all of the activities we had planned for the lessons.

What were your objectives for this strategy?

My objectives for the class meetings were to get students to realize their behavior was limiting our class time and to help them get back on task. I wanted them to think about their behavior and ways they could fix it.

Explain how you implemented this strategy:

I implemented the lesson by having a class discussion in the beginning of the class about their behavior. I asked students why they thought we were having this meeting and ways they could improve their behavior to get to all of the activities planned during class. I also had students read some of the rules that were set around the gym to help reinforce them. I picked three rules to reinforce with the student students then filled out a worksheet about how they felt they did that day. I then also had a closing discussion about it.

After you first implemented the strategy, was there any follow-up? Please describe:

Classes after the discussion I reminded students about the rules of the gym and also reinforced different rules. If students got distracted out of hand reminded them about what we had discussed and why it was important to listen while others are talking and follow directions.

Describe your evaluation of the success of implementing this strategy. What was the engagement level of the students? How did they react to your implementation? What would you do similarly/differently if you used this strategy for character development in the future?

I would say the class meeting was successful with the students. After implementing the class meeting into class students were more focused and followed the directions. There were still some students that continued to interrupt or not follow directions but most of the students were focused and we had time to get to all of the activities planned. It took the students full engagement to focus on listening to others when they were talking and follow the directions. I believe the students reacted positively to the meeting because they understood why we weren’t getting to all of the activities and what it would take to fix the problem. It also seems students were honest and took their time when they filled out the worksheet. I would do this again if I had a class that had similar problems in the future. I believe the class meeting and the worksheet worked well together and I reached my objective for the strategy.

*Please attach a lesson plan with the sections that involved the character strategy highlighted (this would include an objective as well as the activities that you planned)

Nutrition Lesson: k-2

Extra lesson

Objective: Students will learn humerus as well as review other bones learned. Students will also learn about food groups, and benefits of eating in moderation and a variety of food groups.

Class meeting:

Students haven’t been following directions and are talking when others are talking. As a result, much of class time is wasted having discussions about behavior in the gym or students asking questions because they are talking instead of listening. Ask students questions about how they can fix the problem and focus on three PE rules: listen to others when they are speaking, follow directions, and participate through the whole class. Students are going to focus on the three rules during class and at the end fill out a worksheet and also have a discussion at the end.

Introduce new bone:

Introduce the humerus to students and review bones they have already learned. Use fluffy to show students where bones are and also have students practice finding bones on own body.

Nutrition lesson:

Introduce students to the 5 food groups. Show them pictures of different fruits, vegetables, meat and beans, diary, and grains. Have students try to guess what food groups the food belongs in. Also introduce them to eating a variety of foods and in moderation with a lot of healthy food and a little bit of junk food.

Nutrition tag:

The objective of the game is to collect sets of cards. A set consists of one food from each food group. Students collect cards by running to buckets surrounded by a safety zone that is in each corner of the gym. Students can only collect one card from a bucket. They must leave that safety zone and enter another one before they reenter it. Once they have a set they must give it to the teacher to check it. There will be three taggers that wear jerseys. The taggers represent an unhealthy food. When a runner is tagged they must give the tagger a card and can then continue in the game.

Assessment:

Have students help with passing out pencils and worksheets. When everyone has a worksheet students must wait for me to read the question before they answer. After answering a question they must look up at me so I know they are finished.

Closing discussion:

Talk with students about how class went and they thought they did individually during class. Remind students to continue working on it for next time.

Safety:

Set up mats in front of skis, basketball hoops, and fridges. Make sure to set boundaries clearly for students. Using black outline around gym.
