The NHS Council establishes the national standards for all NHS chapters. Local chapters create their own by-laws, which are to be consistent with and comply with the NHS National Constitution.

Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that is awarded to a high school student. The NHS has worked hard to bring the accomplishments of outstanding students to the attention of parents, teachers, peers and the community. The rules for membership are based upon a student’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character. These four criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Prerequisite Conditions for Selection

1. Membership is restricted to current sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

2. There will be no quota or percentage of members per class. Students who meet the criteria should and will be inducted regardless of the number applying.

3. Students need to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 to be considered.

Criteria for Selection

1. GPA of 3.2 or higher to be considered

2. Evaluation of candidate’s performance in the areas of

a. Leadership

b. Service

c. Character

All eligible candidates will be given the opportunity to apply for membership, but eligibility does not guarantee acceptance. It is your responsibility to be aware of the deadlines that are posted in this application packet. Students who do not turn in their application packets by the deadline will not be eligible to join the Booker T. Washington chapter of the National Honor Society that current year. Students who follow all the directions and who are invited to join the Booker T. Washington chapter of NHS will be sent congratulatory letters with other specifics of the induction ceremony.

Scholarship:

Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average, set by the local school’s faculty council meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character (NHS Constitution, Article IX, section 2).

Service:

This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership:

Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and person’s who exemplify positive attitudes about life.

Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character:

The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern and respect for others and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

Committee

The NHS Faculty Council consists of 5 members that are appointed each year by the principal to do the following:

1. Review the selection procedure for NHS.

2. Review student’s academic eligibility.

3. Review faculty ratings of students.

4. Review the student applications and evaluate the “service” section.

5. Review the student’s disciplinary record to make the final selections.

Please read and choose one of the quotes below to prepare a well-developed essay/statement of 150 words.

1. “Success waits patiently for anyone who has the determination and strength to seize it.” Booker T. Washington

2. “There are two ways of exerting one's strength: one is pushing down, the other is pulling up.” Booker T. Washington

3. “Success is not measured by where you are in life, but the obstacles you've overcome.” Booker T. Washington

Honor Code

I hereby state on my honor that the information I have submitted on this application is entirely correct to the best of my knowledge. I understand that the NHS Advisors reserve the right to verify my application, and that falsifying information will result in immediate withdrawal from the application process and may warrant further punitive action from the society.
