10F ELA – The PigmanPersonality Traits EssayNAME:____________________K. WarkentineSo essays can be intimidating, but they are just longer, more developed ideas in writing. This writing task will build TWO main ideas (2 LARGE paragraphs) that will have an INTRO and CONC to help link them together. Having your details/notes will allow you to choose elements to build your writing.STEP ONE: Outlining your choices. Ideas need support from the book and explanation to help the reader make sense of your writing. We will build the Introduction and Conclusion LAST (I know that’s strange, but trust me!)PARAGRAPH 2: Negative Personality Traits. Choose 2 negative traits with 2 different characters; one from John/Lorraine and one from secondary characters (Mr. P, Norton, J’s parents, L’s mom) and examples from DIFFERENT parts of the book (don’t make it all just chapter 3). Think deeper WHY this character acts this way. This can be part of explaining the impact of this behaviour part of the ic Sentence: Introduce 2 negative traits and characters to discuss in ONE complete sentence. Write/Keyboard your paragraphs double spaced (set line spacing to 2) Time to move on to Introductions and Conclusions! These paragraphs are shorter, but are SOOOOOOO important!!!!INTRODUCTION: Now that the details of the essay have been chosen it’s time to look at what to put in the introduction. AVOID announcements like “Here is my essay about…” or “Hi There! Want to read my essay?” An effective introduction will entice/interest the reader to want to learn from your writing. As well the introduction is a road map (without spoilers) of what is to come.First Sentence/Hook: The “Hook” is a statement to grab the reader’s attention. This can be a quote (from a famous person or an interesting line from the book), or a question. Sample hooks: Why do people lie? Lying is a habit people use…. Or “We didn’t mean to kill him” is a shocking confession in book The Pigman. People confess because…Short plot summary: Remember the reader hasn’t read the book so summarize the plot of The Pigman in approx. 3-4 sentences mentioning characters by name. Make sure to write it in the same order that the reader will read.HOOK: _________________________________________________________________PLOT SUMMARY: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________PARAGRAPH TOPICS: _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________CONCLUSION: Hang in there you’re almost there!A writing this complex needs to wrap up the main ideas for the reader so your insightful ideas linger in their brain. The reader shouldn’t leave feeling like “What was that?” To do this include the following in the conclusion.Re-cap personality traits analyzed in the essay.Extend beyond the book/characters to how we can learn/apply these traits and reasons we also can act this way. Make a statement(s) about negative traits and then make a statement(s) about positive traits. Challenge the reader to see traits in action in the world and themselves (but don’t make the reader feel too bad/guilty so end with positive traits). Re-Cap NEGATIVE TRAITS:________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Re-Cap POSITIVE TRAITS: _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________EXTEND IDEAS TO THE REAL WORLD ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ................
