Start revising Othello

1. Pick one of the main themes and build yourself a list of five memorable (i.e. short and snappy) quotations. Choose from:

• love

• jealousy

• race.

2. Note down three character traits for any character, backing them up with memorable quotations. Of these quotations, at least one should be the character’s own words, and at least one from someone else.

3. Collect three to five memorable quotations for one of the imagery themes (semantic fields used figuratively):

• nature

• poisoning/infection

• heaven/hell

• animals

• the sea.

4. Collect three memorable quotations to illustrate one of the following:

• Iago being manipulative

• Othello gradually losing his mind.

5. Select a speech that you feel is ‘key’ (one of Othello’s, or a soliloquy of Iago’s perhaps) and analyse it by:

• deciding what its main theme/message is

• finding 3-5 linguistic points to make about semantics and grammar in the speech.

6. Find three memorable quotations that relate to one of the following minor themes:

• deception

• honesty

• women and men

• reputation and appearances.
