BILL GATES (1955…)
Bill Gates is a very important person in the computer industry. He has been chief executive officer of Microsoft Corporation for several years. He is also the richest person in the United States. How did he do it?
He learned a lot from his parents.While Bill was going to school,his father went to college,got his degree,and became a success- ful lawyer.From this, Bill learned that you have to work hard if you want something. His mother was a very busy teacher, but she enjoyed going to parties, from this, he learned something else; if you want to work hard and play hard, you have to make a schedule.
When Bill was young, he spent a lot of time alone.While most of his friends were playing,Bill read all of the World Book Encyclopaedia and finished it when he was 8 years old.
In fact, Bill's childhood was not all work. He used to play a lot of sport such as swimming, tennis, water skiing. He was very serious about sports. He loved winning. When Bill got older, he spent more and more time working and playing on the computer.
Before he was 20, Bill developed the world's first computer language for the personal computer (PC). Once, when he was thinking about the future, he realised something important. A century ago, people were able to live in better conditions than their parents thanks to the progress made in science and technology. But the outcome of this progress was slow. For instance, most people used to travel long distances on foot or by stage coach. Home activities were done manually, and were therefore time consuming. On the other hand, people had an important social life, since they had more opportunities to meet and interact. So they were able to chat with neighbours at shops or in clubs and have a cup of coffee with friends or relatives and tell stories and jokes. Likewise, family visits were frequent and kept the folklore alive, with the grandparents who used to tell traditional tales or sing folk songs to their grandchildren.
Unfortunately, with the development of audiovisual means such as the cinema, radio, television and then personal appliances like the computer, CD-ROMs and DVDs, have increased stress, loneliness and anxiety among people. So our great grandparents used to be happier since they had a simpler life.
This is probably so, since closer contacts among neighbours, friends and families were important for social life. However, scientific progress in all fields, particularly in medicine, modes of transportation and communication, show that our lives are today more comfortable than a century ago.

The Greeks and Romans were probably the first tourists in Egypt. Perhaps they came to see the Lighthouse and the Library in Alexandria, and the Pyramids. Tourists today still come to visit famous historical sites all over Egypt.
In the 19th century, rich Europeans used to send their sons on the 'Grand Tour' to visit the great cultural centres of Europe. This was done to educate them and give them experience in life. They were able to travel by sea and by carriage often in rather uncomfortable conditions. But they used to take ideas of foreign cultures back home with them and broadened their knowledge of the world.
Modern tourism really began when an Englishman, Thomas Cook, arranged the first package tour in 1841. The trip was so successful that he formed a travel company which still has his name. Tourism really became successful in the 1960s, when cheaper air travel developed. Tourism today is a massive industry spreading to every corner of the Earth. Tourism is the second most important earner of foreign currency in Egypt after petroleum products.

During the past decade there has been a considerable increase in the number of natural disasters which have caused hardship and suffering in many countries. Disasters are not confined to particular regions, nor do they discriminate between developing and developed countries. For the past year alone, widespread floods in France , Hungary, Italy , Switzerland , Algeria and Vietnam as well as devastating earthquakes in El Salvador and India have reminded us of the need to take global preventive measures against disasters.

FIRST TERM EXAM 2LE
One day more than fifty years ago,a young man had an accident on his motor-bike in which he suffered a few apparently minor injuries. There was a bruise on the left side of his forehead and some slight bleeding from his left ear. He was taken to hospital for examination but X-rays did not reveal any other injuries .
Nevertheless, the doctor who was treating him decided to keep him in hospital for further observations because the young man was having difficulty in speaking and seemed very confused.
At the time of the accident ,the young man was 22 years old, and the date was August, 1933. A week later, he was able to carry on what seemed a perfect normal conversation. However, he told the doctor that he was only 11 years old and that the date was February, 1922. what is more, he could not remember anything that had happened since 1922. For example, he could not recall having spent five in Australia, or coming back to England and working for two years on a golf course.
As time went by, part of his memory of the eleven missing years came back. A few weeks later, he even remembered his years in Australia, But the two years of his life just before the accident were still a complete blank. Three-weeks after his injury, he went back to the village where he had been living for those two years. Everything looked unfamiliar and he did not recall ever having been there before.
Despite this, he was able to take up his old job again in the village and to do it satisfactorily. But he often got lost when walking around the village and found it difficult to remember what he had done during the day. Slowly, however, his memory continued to return so that, about ten weeks after the accident, he could even remember most of the previous two years. There remained only one complete gap in his memory : he could remember absolutely nothing about what he had done a few minutes immediately before the accident or the accident itself. This part of his memory never came back.

In some countries in which there is very little rain at any time, the farmers have to irrigate their lands. Irrigation is easy if there is a great river near the crops, and if there is a large quantity of water in it. Canals can carry the river water to the land when necessary. In some seasons, there may be too much water in the river, and the water may cover all the land near it. At other times the river water may not be enough for all the farmers, and it will be difficult to irrigate the land.
To prevent these difficulties, a dam may be built. This will store water for dry seasons, and in wet seasons it will prevent the flooding of water. As a consequence, houses and lands will be covered with water. Most people will accept to move to other places. Then the country can have the necessary amount of water at all times, more crops will be grown, and there will be more food for everyone.
Modern dams are usually built with hard material, but in some countries like India they are built of earth. There were other dams built years ago like in Iraq across the river Tigris. The Romans were famous dam-builders, too.
Some great modern dams have been built in Africa. No doubt, many other dams will be built in the future.

In the ninth century the Arabs became the chief standard-bearers of science and philosophy. The golden age of Arab science lasted for about two centuries, from 900 to 1100 A.D.
The Arabs made important contributions to mathematics. In his treatise of the Arithmetic the Persian Al-Khwarizmi introduced a new method -the number system that we use today. Al-Khwarizmi also wrote a treatise on Algebra, based on Hindu sources.
The Arabs were greatly interested in astronomy. The caliph Ma'mun built a splendid observatory in Baghdad in the year 829, and his astronomers such as Al-Battani made regular observations of the heavens.
Alchemy had many devotees among the Arabs. The name alchemy itself is of Arabic origin. The foremost Arab alchemist was Jaber, a Syrian physician who lived in the 8th or 9th century. Jaber perfected new methods of evaporation, filtration and crystallization and he was able to prepare a number of chemical substances.

Frederick Douglass is one of the greatest leaders of the fight against slavery. He was born in 1817 in Maryland. As a young boy, the wife of his master taught him to read and write. At the age of 21,, he decided to escape to New York. From there, he went to New Bedford, Massachusetts. One day, he was asked to speak at an anti-slavery meeting in Nantucket. From that day, large crowds came to hear him wherever he went.
Later, he wrote a book about himself entitled: "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas." Afraid to be arrested by slave-catchers, he escaped to England. There, his freedom was bought from his former master.
In 1847, Douglass returned to the United States and started an anti-slavery newspaper called: "The North Star." It gave a voice to other black writers .They called for equal treatment of the blacks. They also called for equal treatment of women, tolerance, peace, brotherhood and dignity. Douglass was one of the first American men to join the women's rights movement of the time.
Frederick Bailey- his real name- died in 1895. "There was no greater hero than he" are the words of praise carved on his tombstone.

Throughout Europe, and also in other areas of the world such as India, China and parts of America, forests are being destroyed. According to one prediction, 90% of German forests will have vanished by the end of the century. This destruction is caused by air pollution. Industry, nuclear power stations and cars are mainly responsible. They emit gases into the air which, after a series of chemical changes turn into toxic acids. The Olympic Games are a sports festival which is held every four years. They are famous for athletics events .such as the "100 metres" and the high jump. However, as well as athletics , there are a number other individuals sports, for example , swimming and boxing . Team sports like soccer and hockey are played and the number of new sports increases all the time. Theae days, sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere regard taking part in the Olympic Games as the highlight of their career.
The original Olympic Games took place in Greece from around 776 BC to AD 393. The games were a part of a religious festival held at the stadium of Olympian western Greece. The people believed that theae competitions pleased the spirits of the dead. At first, the only event was a race on foot of about 1880 metres. Eventually, longer races were added, along with wrestling , boxing and spear throwing. In 448 BC, a dangerous sport called pancratium , was introduced.
The Roman Empire conquered Greece during the second century BC and the Games lost their religious meaning. The athletes became interested only in winning money, so in AD 349 the Emperor Theodosius banned the Games . That was the end of the Olympics for 1.500 years.
During this time, an earthquake destroyed the Stadium of Olympia and a landslide covered it .However, a group of German archaeologists discovered the ruins. The discovery gave Baron Pierre de Coubertin , a French educator and thinker, an idea He thought that athletics played an important part in forming a person's character. He also thought that international sports competitions would encourage world peace. So in 1896 the first modern Olympic Games were held in Greece. De Coubertin insisted that the Gam es
should be for amateurs. In sport, an amateur is not paid but a professional is paid. For ruling body of the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee , insisted that only amateurs could compete.

The Nightingale
Within the garden of the emperor of China there lived a nightingale, who sang so beautifully that everyone commented on it, be they the poor fishermen who worked near by, or travelers from far off lands, who wrote poetry about the nightingale.
Word finally reached the emperor, who demanded that the nightingale be presented to him. When his court finally found the small grey bird in the wood, the nightingale agreed to sing before the emperor. The visit was a great success, as the nightingale brought tears to the emperor's eyes. Unfortunately, the nightingale was required to remain at court, instead of flying free in the wood.
One day the emperor received a mechanical nightingale. That was the end of the real nightingale's popularity, since the mechanical one could sing without rest, and was much prettier, being covered with sparkles. No one noticed the real nightingale flying back to her home.
By and by, the mechanical nightingale broke down. The emperor became very sick, until one night., he lay in his bed and Death sat on his chest, waiting. Suddenly from outside, the nightingale began to sing. As she sang, even Death stopped to listen, and the emperor became well again. The emperor asked the nightingale to come and live in the palace again, but the little bird refused, instead agreeing to come and sing outside his window every night.
In the morning, healthy and happy emperor surprised his servants, who came in expecting to find him dead.

A bomb exploded prematurely last week in a car parked near a Bahrain market place. "A big explosion took place yesterday in a car parked near Issa Town Commercial Market" a Government official told Reuters.
"The car might have been prepared to be used for an explosion in another place but exploded before they were able to carry it," the official said. "Explosive material, a timing device, tubes and two petrol containers were found in the car," he said, adding that security Authorities were investigating
The explosion south of Manama was the second this month and the fourth in Bahrain, the Gull's main banking and financial centre.
Fatima Durbash, a Bahraini who witnessed the explosion said. "That day, I heard a big bang and I turned and found the car burning, the flames were going up. I saw a man in a car parked near by. He was trying to pull his injured wife out of the car. He asked me to help him."
Fatima began crying and added: "Now, I can no longer go out because I am very afraid to die in a similar crash tomorrow, next week or next month."

Ibn Sina was better known as a scientist. He was born in the year 371 of the Hegira, near Bukhara in the old Persian Empire, now a large city in the Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan.
As a young boy he read a lot about Islam. He learnt the Koran by heart before he was ten, thanks to his father who was a very good Muslim and took great care of his education. Later at school he studied Arabic literature and science. At fourteen he studied medicine, alone by reading hundreds of books and by finding the explanations to his questions on his own.
Before he was twenty, Ibn Sina was a well known doctor. One of his patient's was the Sultan of Bukhara whom he treated for a serious illness. When he was cured the grateful Sultan allowed Ibn Sina to use his private library in the palace. There, for two years the young doctor improved his knowledge of medicine by reading books written by the Greek and Chinese doctors. At the same time, he discovered Aristotle's books. Aistoltle was a famous Greek philosopher who lived in ancient Greece. Ibn Sina was impressed by his thought. These quiet years of study were suddenly interrupted by the invasion of Bukhara by the Turks. Life became difficult and Ibn Sina decided to leave the town.
He spent many years living and travelling in the Arab world. He studied more books by Arab doctors and philosophers. He wrote a lot of books about medicine, philosophy, religion, astronomy and science.
He was fifty seven when he died. He had become world famous. His most important book was called "The Canons of Medicine". For hundreds of years it was the best book about medicine and was studied in many universities round the world. The Europeans called him Avicenna. One of the greatest mysteries of the world, for which scientists have so far been unable to find any satisfactory explanation, is the Bermuda Triangle, sometimes called "the Graveyard of the Atlantic". This is an area of the Western Atlantic between Bermuda and Florida, roughly triangular in shape, where since 1945 at least a hundred ships and planes and over a thousand people have disappeared. No wreckage has been found, no bodies, lifebelts or any other evidence of disaster.lt is as if these planes, ships and people had never existed. In some cases a radio message has been received from an aircraft reporting everything in order a few minutes before all contact was lost. In the extraordinary case of five navy planes disappearing on a routine mission from Florida, the rescue plane sent to locate them vanished also. There have been references to the curious white light observed by the astronauts on their way to space, but was also noted by Christopher Columbus five centuries ago. Whether this light has any connection with the mysterious disappearance is unknown- it is just another curious circumstances as yet unexplained.
Many fantastic theories have been advanced to account for the disturbing incidents that occur in the area of the Bermuda Triangle.lt has been asked whether these appearances are caused by extraterrestrial activity, by some undiscovered sources of energy or some dimension of time or space unguessed by man. There is no answer and speculation continues as anxiety increases.

If we evaluate nowadays the potential of technology and science, like for example to foresee a natural catastrophe and prepare the means to remedy the situation, we can say that the scientist's work is still very slow. The natural catastrophe may cause many victims and great damage that leave thousands of people without shelter.
The last violent earthquake that occurred in the South-East of Asian shores on December 26, 2004 ravaged many regions by a murderous wave called "Tsunami" The scientists did not foresee the earthquake to evacuate the population from that giant tidal wave. However, we recognize the International Community's big help and intervention means, which were set up for the population's rescue, care and emergency shelters. Unfortunately, in this domain, it is not the lack of means that matters, but the methodical organization to put an end to all forms of anarchy.

There was once a king who loved his wife very much. When he discovered that she was wicked, he killed her. "All women are wicked," he said. "I will punish them."
He took a new wife each day. After one day's marriage, he cut off her head and married again. This went on for some time. All the people in the country were very unhappy. Now the king had a chief minister who had two beautiful daughters. The elder of the two decided that she would try to cure the king of his madness. She went to her father and said, "Father, I want to marry the king. Please go and tell him."
The king was delighted when the chief minister told him. The marriage took place at once. After the wedding, the new queen said, "If I am going to die tomorrow, please let me have my sister with me for a short time."
The king agreed and the sister came. The queen had told her sister about the plan and she knew what to do. She waited for night-time. Then the queen's sister said," The king cannot sleep. Why don't you tell us one of your stories?"
The queen said, "No, the king may not want to listen." But the king said, "Yes, tell us a story." So the queen began, but when she reached the most exciting part she stopped." Go on," said the king. "It's time to stop now," said the queen. "What a pity! The next part of the story is even more exciting."
The king thought, "There is no need to kill her tomorrow. I will wait until the day after. Then I can hear the end of the story."
But the second night, the queen finished the story and began another, and again she stopped at a very exciting place. Again her life was saved. On the third night the same thing happened. This went on night after night until they had been married a whole year. Then a beautiful son was born to the queen.
The king now loved his wife and understood that there are good women and bad women just as there are good men and bad men. The king was ashamed of his actions.

Glenn Cunningham and his brother, FIoyd wanted to become runners .They lived in the state of Kansas. Every morning the two brothers ran to school.They always arrived before the other pupils .Teir job was to make fire in the oil stove .
One morning the two brothers put the oil in the stove and started the fire .The stove exploded .Someone had put gasoline in the oil can !
At first , Glenn was unconscious ,then he came to his senses .He got up from the floor and ran out of the burning schoolhouse .Outside he remembered Floyd .He shouted Floyd's name .He heard a moan from the inside the schoolhouse .He ran back inside to look for his brother.

Glenn was seven at the time of the accident .It took a long time for his leg to heal. Time passed slowly for him .His legs finally healed ,but there was a problem.His doctors said that he might never walk again .But he leant to walk with crutches
