Grading:

My assessments consist of quizzes, homework, class work, classroom participation, and final presentations.

You should keep all of your works in a 3-ring binder. Please do not throw away completed works because you will need them for finals.

Any assignment not turned in on the day it is due will only be accepted one day late and for half credit. It is your responsibility to contact the teacher for any work missed due to an excused absence. You will have as many days as you were absent to turn in any work that you missed due to that absence. Failure to turn in missed work on time will result in a 0. Remember there is a participation grade for this course; therefore, it is vital that you speak up in class as much as possible to ensure full participation points!

Please be assured that I will grade you fairly. Should you have concerns regarding your grades, please make an appointment to meet with me as soon as possible. I will work with you during my planning time or after school, but we should not discuss grades in class time.

I believe that you are an honest student. Copy other student’s homework is cheating, and it diminishes the bond of trust between student, teacher and other members of the community. All parties involved will get a 0 on that homework.

Fun facts about Chinese characters.

1 Chinese is hard

2 What makes it hard IS the CHARACTERS

2 You will have to learn both simplified and traditional

3The more characters you learn the better, but there is diminishing returns, however learning the next 100 or next 1000 actually gets easier

4 The reason is because your existing character knowledge base can be leveraged to find/search/learn new characters.

5 There is a sound and meaning correlation in characters. We have figured this puzzle out

6 If you want to just add/delete/swap one part of a character to find others, you just need 1000 character knowledge

7 If you want to do a spatial search with a character, you just need to know a few hundred

8 Beyond the existing 200+ radicals, there is a total of 500 characters/parts which comprise all possible characters. You can then mix/match these parts easily to search/learn/write the rest.

Smart phone technology:

Many cool apps are available free of charge. You could practice pronunciation and vocabulary in a fun format. These tools will help you develop abilities to function on your own in Chinese.

Sunrise Method, free app from Apple

Chinese input - Could be used to search words by radicals. Need to know the number of strokes of the word.

PLECO, free app from Apple:

Also for Chinese input. This app is easier to use than Sunrise Method. Select from a list of radicals to assemble Chinese characters. It displays phrases associated with the word.

Kuaishou, Tip Tap Tones are Window apps.

WeChat – Free social app used internationally.
