Preparing Learners for HFMA’s CRCR Exam Day

Note: The roles and rules for the Credentialed Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) Exam are defined by the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). MC Strategies supports the HFMA’s CRCR exam.

Purpose of the CRCR Exam

This product provides HFMA credentialing. Upon the successful completion of the exam, you earn the CRCR designation that serves to authorize a national level of technical achievement for a body of knowledge within the healthcare revenue cycle arena.

Overview for Learners

You are responsible for studying and sitting for the CRCR exam. The exam will be proctored. Proctors are chosen from manager-level or above and at least one level above the highest-level Learner taking the exam. The role of the Proctor is to supervise the Learners and uphold the exam’s integrity; as well as, setup the training room and unlock the exam. The Proctor is also responsible for reporting any computer problems you might have during the exam.

Preparing for the CRCR Exam

Preparing for the exam includes study guides and information about the exam.

CRCR Study Guides

You have the option to choose to read the online study materials that consists of three (3) self-study online training lesson (study guides) developed to assist and prepare you for the examination. These study guides take approximately 12-15 hours to complete. Your Organizational Administrator (OA) will grant you access to all three (3) modules. It is not mandatory to read the online study materials. If you do not have access to any of the three study guides, contact your OA for assistance.

Where to Find the Study Guides

The study guides and the exam display as lessons from your ‘My Assignments’ page in the LMS. (See example below.) The study guides are divided into three (3) HFMA Revenue Cycle Credentialing” modules. The exam displays as a lesson named “HFMA Credentialing Revenue Cycle Representative Exam.”

Each chapter has review questions at the end of the chapter that are not graded and are only for your benefit.

CRCR Exam

You will receive an email from either the OA or the Proctor of the exam. This email tells you the time and location of the exam and other miscellaneous information.

About the Exam

Questions from the Exam cover the following topics:

• 64 questions from Patient Access

• 65 questions from Claims Processing Account Resolution, and Cash

• 21 questions from Compliance, Financial Management, and Support Departments

Questions are multiple choice type questions presented one at-a-time in random order. A typical question displays below.

Where to find the CRCR Exam and Exam Date

You can find and also see the date of the exam from your “My Assignments – Assignments Not Completed” tab. From the lesson, which is really the exam, named the “HFMA Credentialed Revenue Cycle Representative Exam” link, to the right the Due Date for the exam, is the date you take the exam. For example in the image below, the exam is scheduled on 03-26-2009.

How to Answer Questions on the Exam

Read each question and the four possible answer statements (A, B, C, D) carefully. Click the radio button next to the statement you think best answers the question. To select a different answer, simply click that answer’s radio button. Only one statement can be selected per question. When you have selected your answer, click the “Submit” button on the lower right. This submits your answer and moves to the next question on the exam. Once you click “Submit” you will not be able to go back to a previous question to change your answer nor will the system allow you to skip questions. A submitted answer is your final answer.

Confirmations Before the CRCR Exam

Before the day of the exam, confirm your exam date, time, and location with your OA or Proctor.

What Should I Bring to the CRCR Exam?

• Valid photo ID (e.g., employee badge, driver’s license).

• Calculator. The calculator cannot be a cell phone.

• Writing utensil. You will be given 2 pieces of scratch paper. The Proctor will tell you to write your name of both pieces of paper and when you complete the exam; you will be responsible to turn both pieces of scratch paper back to the Proctor.

• Cell phones and/or other recording devices are not permitted in the exam room.

• Check in with your Proctor when you arrive in the exam room.

• LMS log on and password.

What are the Rules/Responsibilities During the CRCR Exam

• If you have a computer problem, raise your hand for the Proctor. If necessary, the proctor extends your exam time. If you must be logged-in again, click the exam link and you will return to the last question on the screen prior to the technical computer problem.

• Do not engage in any unauthorized communication during the examination with other Learners.

• Once you begin to take the exam, the Proctor cannot clarify questions on the exam.

• If you need to use the restroom, raise your hand for the Proctor. The Proctor will keep your badge/ID until you return. The Proctor may time your absence.

• Once you begin to take the exam, the Proctor cannot answer a question or clarify a question from you on the exam.

• You cannot start the exam until the Proctor tells you to start.

• If you do not pass the exam the first time, notify your supervisor and request a rescheduled exam date/time.

• There is a timer in the upper right of the screen. When the timer reaches three (3) hours, if any questions remain unanswered, they will be marked incorrect. When the exam closes, you receive your results. You may need to refresh your screen (press F5 on your keyboard, or right-click and select refresh) to see your score on the test.

How Do I Open the CRCR Exam?

The Proctor will be your guide. Before you start the exam, the Proctor “unlocks” your exam and then walks you through the beginning pages of the exam before the exam questions and time constraints begin. This walk-through includes allowing you time to read the student affidavit, record the contact information (for the formal CRCR certificate), and time for you to read the instructions for the exam. Then your Proctor tells you to STOP. Your Proctor will tell you when to click the Start My Exam button.

The steps before starting the exam questions are shown below.

1. Log on with your username and password

2. From your Personal Page, click the View button to the right of “My E-learning Lessons.”

3. Click the Assignments Not Completed tab (if not selected).

4. Click the lesson named HFMA Credentialing Revenue Cycle Representative Exam link. If the exam has an unlock image, raise your hand and let the Proctor know about the problem.

5. A “Student Affidavit” opens. (See example below.) Read the affidavit, when you are finished, click the Accept button at the bottom of the page.

6. Complete the contact information. The contact information is for your formal certificate and congratulatory package if you pass the exam. Fields marked with an * are required. Click Save my Information button.

7. Read the directions. STOP. You must wait before starting the exam. Your Proctor will tell you when to click the Start My Exam button.

How Do I get My Exam Results? (Pass/Fail)

Your exam results display when the exam closes.

Important. You may need to refresh your screen (press F5 on your keyboard, or right-click and select refresh) to see your score on the test.

You are requested to complete an evaluation about the exam. Your evaluation remarks are used to provide HFMA with feedback to continually improve the exam.

What If I Do Not Pass the Exam?

1. An example of the page you receive, if you do not pass the exam displays below. A message opens, telling you that “your score was not high enough to achieve the CRCR designation.” Click the Next button to continue.

2. You will then be asked to complete an evaluation of the exam, and then you can return to the Personal Page. Click the Submit button.

3. Click Go to My Personal Page.

4. The Learner’s exam shows as completed from the ‘Assignments All’ tab. However the Learner can see from the score that the exam was not passed. If you want to view your actual score (percentage), it displays on your “personal page” to the right of the exam link.

5. Log-off the LMS. (Log Out – Exit the System)

What If I Pass the Exam?

When you pass the exam, you will first complete an evaluation of the exam. An example of the evaluation displays below. Complete the evaluation and click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

2. You will then be asked to complete an evaluation of the exam, and then you can return to the Personal Page. Click the Submit button.

3. The Learner’s exam shows as completed from the ‘Assignments All’ tab. However the Learner can see from the score that the exam was not passed. If you want to view your actual score (percentage), it displays on your “personal page” to the right of the exam link.

4. Log-off the LMS. (Log Out – Exit the System)

What Do I Do When I Finish the Exam?

• Complete the evaluation. If you failed the exam, you must still complete the evaluation.

• If you passed the exam, do NOT print your temporary certificate in the exam room.

• If you want to view your actual score (percentage), it displays on your “personal page” to the right of the exam link.

• Verify your name on your temporary certificate before leaving the exam room. If there is a problem, notify your Proctor.

• Return your two scratch papers with your name written on them to the Proctor before leaving the exam room.

• Shut-down your workstation (if asked during directions by the Proctor).

Receiving a Certificate of Achievement

The certificate a Learner prints after the exam is a temporary certificate and you can submit this to your supervisor. HFMA mails the formal certificate to your home address.

There are two certificates: one for a passing score of 75% to 89% and one for 90% or higher. The example below shows a certificate for a passing score of 75% to 89%.

FAQ’s for Learners

• What date do I take the exam? Answer: The exam can only be taken on the day it list as the Due Date.

• What do I do if I have a computer problem, Answer: raise your hand for the Proctor.

• Can I print the exam? Answer: This exam will not be available as an “instructor’s guide.” There is no way to print this exam. The exam is proprietary to HFMA and should not be reproduced in any way.

• My exam is locked what do I do? Answer: You cannot access the exam until it is unlocked by the Proctor of the exam.

• Can I start the exam early? Answer: You cannot start the exam until the Proctor tells you to start.

• How many hours is the exam? Answer: The exam is timed – 3 hours in length. The timer starts when the first exam question opens. The timer displays during the exam in the right-hand corner of your screen.

• How many questions are on the test? Answer: The exam is 150 multiple-choice questions out of 250 in the pool so each exam will be different.

• What if I fail the test? Answer: If you do not pass the exam the first time, notify your supervisor and request a rescheduled exam date/time.

• How many questions do I need to pass? Answer: You receive credentialing if you answer 113 questions correctly (75%). Or, if you answer 135 questions or more correctly (90%), you receive credentialing with “distinction.”
