Chapter 5 Chemical Names and Formulas Introductory Skillsheet
First Semester Binary Formula Naming and Writing.
The simplest compounds, binary compounds, contain just two elements. Some examples include: Sodium chloride, NaCl; Lithium oxide, Li2O
In naming binary compounds, follow these rules: 1. Write the name of the metal element ( the positive charge) first. 2. To make the second word of the formula name change the ending of the non-metal element’s name to -ide. For example bromine changes to bromide and phosphorus changes to phosphide.
Metals have positive charges when combined with non-metals. The non-metals have negative charges when combined with metals.
Practicing the naming of Binary Compounds:
1. MgO____________________________
2. BaS_____________________________
3. K3P_____________________________
4. Na3N____________________________
5. Ba3P2 ___________________________
6. Ca3P2___________________________
7. RaSe____________________________
Some TRANSITION metals have more than one positive ionic charge. Look at the correct formulas below:
Cu2O---copper (I) oxide
CuO---copper (II) oxide
FeCl2---iron (II) chloride
FeCl3--- iron (III) chloride
Note that Roman numerals follow the names of some transiton metals ( positive elements). The numerals indicate the charge of the element in the compound.
Practicing the naming Binary compounds that contain transition metal ions. Be sure to write the roman numeral after the metal name!!
8. SnCl4 ____________________________
9. Mn2O3____________________________
10. PbS ____________________________
11. Bi2O5_____________________________
12. FeP_______________________________
13. Fe3P2_____________________________
Writing the formulas for Binary compounds.
To write the formulas of ionic compounds follow these steps. 1. Write out ions with charges. 2. The number next to the charge symbol of the positive ion will be the subscript on the negative ion. (vice versa).
For example: Ba+2 and N-3-------> Ba3N2 (called Barium nitride)
Note a correct ionic formula will have no charge symbols. All numbers will be subscripted. The subscripts will also be written in lowest terms which is known as a formula unit.
Practicing giving the name for the binary ionic compounds:
14. aluminum telluride ____________________
15. iron (III) chloride___________________
16.silver chloride______________________
Practicing giving the name or the correct formula for the binary ionic compounds:
17. CaH2_________________________
18. Al2O3___________________________
19. Mercury (II) oxide__________________
20. Na3As__________________________
21. iron(III) iodide _______________________
22. Fe2S3_____________________________
23. Cu2S________________________
24. Cr3N2_________________________
25. Mg3As2________________________
26. Li2O__________________________
27. potassium chloride___________________
28. Cr4C3 _________________
29. zinc sulfide_________________
30. PbO2__________________________
31. lead (IV) fluoride_____________________
