WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

➢ students requiring demonstrations and lab experience to understand chemistry

➢ those considering careers in pharmacology, medicine, nursing, dentistry, physical therapy, veterinary medicine, medical technology, science education, and any field requiring chemistry

➢ all wishing to understand the many and varied uses of chemicals in our daily lives (groceries,

oil products, medicines, plastics, cleaning products, pesticides, cosmetics, etc.).

➢ high school students wishing to fulfill TOPS requirements

➢ college-bound students wanting a thorough understanding of inorganic chemistry and the

fundamentals of organic chemistry

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Using an excellent textbook that is supplemented by demonstrations and labs, the course concentrates on theory and practical problem solving. The fundamentals of inorganic chemistry are covered, with emphasis on interpretation of the Periodic Table and identification of compounds. All major concepts are covered. A basic understanding of measurement and problem-solving is given. The course ends by covering the types, nature and uses of organic compounds. No prior science course is required, but the cumulative nature of the course requires that students keep up and have daily study habits. Because the cross-dimensional method of problem solving is taught, no complex math is required.

Major Topics: Tools & Measurements of the Chemist, Density & States of Matter, The Atom and the Periodic Table, Compounds and Their Bonds , Chemical Reactions, The Mole,

Gas Behavior and the Gas Laws, Solutions & Concentration, Acids and Bases,

Organic Chemistry

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS:

❖ learning how to use and apply the Metric System of measurement

❖ 8 major labs and review games

❖ weekly demonstrations

❖ learning how to use basic chemistry equipment

❖ video presentation of dangerous and costly experiments
