Periodic Table Children’s Book Project

Goal: Creatively construct a booklet about the periodic table on a first or second grade level. In other words; a booklet that elementary school students could learn from and understand.

Specifications:

• The booklet must contain (not necessarily define) the following terms:

Atomic number Element Protons neutrons electrons

Metal nonmetal metalloid period group

Mass number family Mendeleev Moseley ion

Isotope atom

• The booklet must creatively explain periodic law. Use a pattern to help since periodic law is a pattern (like…circle, circle, square, circle, circle…? Square obviously comes next)

• The booklet must illustrate the concepts/differences of atoms, ions and isotopes.

(Remember: atoms haven’t lost anything, ions have lost or gained electrons, isotopes have more or less neutrons)

• The booklet must contain at least three of the following families illustrated in a way that describes their family characteristics (physical/chemical properties):

Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Transition Metals, Chalcogens, Halogens, Noble Gases

Use your notes and the element handbook at the end of the book to help you with the properties.

• The booklet must contain at least two trends and explain the trends (either across a period or down a group) Choose from the following: Mass, Density, Atomic radius, Ionic Radius, Electronegativity, Ionization Energy, Reactivity

• The booklet must explain and illustrate the concepts of valence, oxidation number and octet rule.

I am not concerned about the number of pages you have. It could be done in 6 pages, 10 or maybe 20. I am much more concerned about the quality of the work, the creative ways you come up with to explain and illustrate the concepts, and the fact that it is complete. The rubric you will be graded with is below:

Creativity, Neatness 50pts

Chemistry Concepts Correct 100pts

All words included from first bullet 50pts

Periodic law explained 50pts

Atoms, Ions, Isotopes illustrated 60pts

3 Families illustrated, properties evident 60pts

2 Trends explained 40 pts

Valence, Oxidation number, and Octet rule

Explained and Illustrated 60pts
