Honors Chemistry Project

Honors Chemistry Project

North Carolina Honors Chemistry Course Description states that students in Honors Chemistry are required to do an in-depth study of at least two of the following eight enrichment topics during the course, one of which must be an independent study:

1. Crystal Structure

2. Environmental Chemistry

3. Organic Chemistry

4. Nuclear Medicine

5. Textile Chemicals

6. Polymers

7. Forensics

8. Chemistry of Computers

Overview: You may choose to work alone or you may work with one other person from your class. Choose one of the above topics as the basis to get started. Then do a general research of your main topic and choose one particular subtopic that you want to research in detail. As soon as you choose the particular subtopic, let your teacher know, so that it is reserved for you. No one else is allowed to do that particular subtopic during the semester. (Subtopics will be reserved in the order they are received)

Your Project:

**PowerPoint: (50 Points)

You will develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes for your particular subtopic:

* thorough background information (10 points)

* at least two graphics that help to explain/support your subtopic (10 points)

* A generous summary that details how chemistry is used and/or applies to

your subtopic (10 points)

* Explanation of one career that is related to your topic (10 points)

* Summary (5 points)

*Organization/ Professionalism (5 points)

**Interview:

You will contact one person who is in a career related to your topic. You will conduct an interview with them (in person or by using Skype or Google Hangout). Be sure to record the interview so you can transcribe it later.

**Presentation: (20 Points)

You will create a digital presentation so your classmates can view your project from

the internet. You can either record a video of you presenting your powerpoint. Or

you can use technology like “screencastomatic” to record your voice over the

powerpoint. This video should be about 10 minutes. It will be uploaded onto a class

website, using weebly.

**Portfolio: (20 Points)

You will develop a portfolio [a folder with pockets & three fasteners] containing the

following:

1) a copy of your PowerPoint slides

2) A copy of your interview, transcribed

3) Anything you printed off the internet while doing research

4) A list of all websites used for information in your subtopic. (use website

bibliography rules on school’s intranet page for this list)

5) A summary of two projects that you watch at home.

Due Dates:

• Topic choice – Friday February 8th

• Detailed outline of the research that will be included your powerpoint OR your completed powerpoint slides – Tuesday February 26th

• Presentation finished and submitted online – Thursday April 25th (4/29-5/3 presentations to the class)

• Portfolio (including viewing 2 other projects) – Thursday May 9th

Additional Notes about the Project:

■ Some class time will be provided to get started and to see if students have questions for me about the technology. However, the majority of the research and work should be done outside of class.

■ All parts of the honors project must be turned in by the due date in order to receive any credit, according to NC Honors Science mandate that states “no late work will be accepted”. (Your best bet is to turn it in early so that this is not a problem)

■ Excuses such as “my printer is out of ink” or “I don’t have PowerPoint at home” will not be valid reasons for work to be turned in late. You should not have waited until the last minute to get your work ready. If you find out ahead of time that your printer is out of ink, you can print things at school or use the PowerPoint on school computers.

■ A detailed grading rubric for the projects will be given to you.
