REPORT ON THE SCIENCE ACADEMIES’ LECTURE WORKSHOP ON “MATHEMATICAL PHYSICS” CONDUCTED FROM 22-24 JUNE 2016 AT

PSGR KRISHNAMMAL COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, COIMBATORE.

The Sciences Academies’ lecture workshop on “Mathematical Physics” was conducted from June 22-24, 2016 at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore.

The workshop began with the inaugural function. Dr.N.Yesodha Devi, Secretary, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, welcomed the gathering and felicitated the chief guest and convener of the workshop, Prof.M.Lakshmanan, FNASc, FASc, FNA,FTWAS, Professor of Eminence and NASI Senior Scientist, Centre for Nonlinear Dynamics ,Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli. She also welcomed the other resource person of the day, ind S Krishnaswami, from Chennai Mathematical Institute, Chennai.

Prof.M.Lakshmanan, in his inaugural address, stressed on the importance of the close link between Physics and Mathematics. He explained about the role of the Science Academies in promoting research by various methods like sponsoring workshops and refresher courses in educational institutions and offering short term summer courses to deserving students.

Dr.S.Nirmala, Principal, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, delivered the vote of thanks at the end of the inaugural function.

The first technical session began with a lecture on Differential Equations, including Special Functions by Prof.M.Lakshmanan who explained in a simple and clear manner the concepts of differential equations and their use in Physics. The second part of his lecture was in the second technical session when he introduced and explained special functions.

The next speaker, ind S Krishnaswami, gave two lectures on Vectors and Linear Vector spaces, the first in the first technical session and the next in the second technical session. Starting with an introduction to vectors, he spoke on Pauli matrices , linear transformation, Projections and orthogonal Matrices , Eigen values and Eigen vectors and Principal axis transformation. He discussed about the applications of this theory to solve problems in linear algebra.

The second day, 23-06-2016, began with the third technical session in which Prof.K.P.N.Mutrhy, University of Hyderabad, delivered two lectures on Probability theory. He discussed topics like the sample space, events and probability, Binomial distribution, and Chebyshev inequality. His lectures helped the students to get a clear idea of the concepts of probability theory.

The resource person for the next session was Dr.K.Ramachandran from Bharathiar University who gave two lectures on Computational fluid modelling, the first in the third session and the second in the fourth session. He explained how many physical processes can be modelled by the use of partial differential equations. He also discussed CFD Modeling and simulation.

The first speaker on the third day, 24-6-16 was Dr.S.Sivakumar from IGCAR, who delivered two lectures on the topic “Complex variable theory and transforms” in the fifth technical session. He explained the theory of complex variables and the study of analytical functions in a simple manner. He also taught important theorems like Cauchy Goursat theorem and residue theorem. The next resource person was Dr.S.V.M.Sathyanarayana from Pondicherry University. He delivered two thought provoking lectures on “Group theory “and its applications. He explained the Great Orthogonality theorem and the characters of group representation and Schur’s Lemma representation. He also discussed the methods of solving problems in group theory. The topics covered by Dr.S.Sivakumar and Dr.S.V.M.Sathyanarayana were very useful for students undertaking NET/SET exams.

The workshop concluded with the valedictory session in which Dr.P.Meena, Associate Professor and, Head of the Department of Physics, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, delivered the vote of thanks.

One hundred and twenty five participants, including faculty members and PG and MPhil students benefitted from this workshop. There were 100 participants from other institutions, viz., Government Arts College, Coimbatore, Kongu Nadu College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, NGM College, Pollachi, Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore, Chikkana College of Arts and Science, Tiruppur, St.Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli, Loyola College, Chennai and Kumara Guru College of Technology, Coimbatore. Research Scholars and Physics teachers

from Chennai and Tiruchirapalli had travelled all the way to listen to these knowledge giving lectures. Their reason was “Workshops on Mathematical Physics are rare and when one is conducted they should attend it at any cost”. The remaining 25 participants were from the host institution, PSGR Krishnammal College for Women. The feedback obtained from the participants showed that they were highly appreciative of the choice of speakers and the topics covered.
