Admissions

 

Prerequisites

Students must take and pass admissions examinations prior to consideration for admission.  Students begin matriculation in the  nursing program during their sophomore year of high school, and must have 13 credit hours  completed by the end of that school year.  They should have a good attendance record, and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.  Students are also required to have health clearance from their doctors and dentists.

 

Admission Qualifications

•   Pass the vocabulary and reading comprehension exams, administered by the Practical Nursing Program at the 10th grade level.

 

•  Score minimally 80% on a basic math test covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions and word problems administered by the Practical Nursing Program.

 

Application Process

The Admissions Committee will select students for the Practical Nursing Program from a pool of qualified applicants. Passing test scores do not guarantee acceptance into the program.  The Office of Admissions will notify applicants of program acceptance or denial.

Students needing enrichment instruction can take enrichment classes during the Christmas and Spring breaks, if offered.

 

 

Graduation

Students must pass a comprehensive examination prior to graduation.  They will also qualify to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

 

Curriculum Overview

The Practical Nursing Program is offered in a two-year sequence. Concepts integrated throughout the curriculum include body structure and function, common conditions and disorders, cultural/personal attributes, communication, growth and development, personal-vocational relationships, ethical and legal aspects, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, mental health, and pharmacology.

 

 

First Year

Most first year students attend nursing classes from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. They complete one semester of foundations of nursing followed by one semester of gerontology nursing.

  

 

First Summer Session  

All students attend a full-time 96 hour pharmacology theory course, over a three week time period.

 

 

Second Year

All second year students attend nursing classes from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. They complete one semester of medical-surgical nursing, followed by one semester of pediatrics-obstetrics.

 

Second Summer Session  

Students complete a three-week full-time "strategies for employment" class.

Minimum Standards

 Successful progression in the program is based on the following:

• Grade of C or better in all Practical Nursing courses

• Regular attendance

• Compliance with health requirements
