Interesting Facts about Halloween
One of the favorite children’s holidays is Halloween. Creative Halloween costumes and decorations are ready by the end of October to participate in this after-dark celebration. Preparations include carving pumpkins to make a traditional Jack-o-Lantern, decorating homes and front yards; and inviting friends to the costume parties. On October 31st everyone has lots of fun - children participate in trick-or-treating, teenagers play pranks and adults visit themed carnivals.
Here are some facts from all around the world about this fun celebration:
• Halloween’s traditional colors, orange and black, symbolize the fall harvest and dark, evil forces.
• Many pre-Halloween events take place in October, including the impressive Zombie Walk in Toronto, Canada, with over 6,000 people dressed like walking dead.
• Other celebrations related to Halloween are the Days of the Dead in Mexico and Christian All Saints’ Day, both celebrated on November 1st.
• Halloween is one of the oldest holidays that people celebrate today with a history of more than 2000 years.
• The name “Halloween” comes from the ancient name of this holiday that was “All Hallows Eve”.
• The feast of Samhain, a celebration of Celtic New Year, took place annually on October 31st. Many of Samhain traditions like wearing costumes and masks, making bonfires and asking for treats, now are attributed to Halloween.
Superstitious people believe that on Halloween eve you can meet a real witch or a ghost, if you wear your clothes inside out and walk backwards. Another belief is that seeing a spider on Halloween means that you’ll meet your true love very soon.
Halloween is a fun autumn holiday that is adored by children. They love being scared and to scare others, wearing costumes and carving pumpkins – but most of all they love getting treats!
