To whom it may concern:

It has been nearly a week since the destructive winds and rains of Hurricane Mar?a made landfall in Puerto Rico. There are 3.5 million American citizens in the Island without power, water and with limited communication. Many lost their homes and suffered crippling losses from the storm. Most of the businesses were forced to close their doors and many lost some or their entire inventory in the aftermath of the storm. The total cost to the local economy is still being calculated and many experts suspect that the total impact will run into the billions of dollars.

Our Chapter is focusing efforts to satisfice children's needs in shelters island wide. Chapter members have done an initial screening and there are many children with common non-urgent conditions that could be treated without the need to visit any of our already overwhelmed hospitals or emergency departments.

There are many aid groups that are looking for ways to help. The AAP Puerto Rico Chapter is asking for first aid items to help children in the shelters. This effort will help minimize hospital visits and avoid overcrowding in the pediatric emergency rooms. The aids will be centralized through our Chapter Board of Directors.
