Ways to Save Resources



• Great place to get started; check out the menu on the left hand side of the screen for information on saving money 101.

• Make sure to have the mind set for saving money; be aware of not just going out and buying stuff you may not need!

• A study of saving behavior by Venti (Dartmouth) and Wise (Harvard) demonstrated that people with less money actually saved more money than people with more money.

• Work on adjusting your attitude towards spending money. It takes work to be good at money management.

• Explore the menu on the left hand side of the web site for help on saving money in a variety of areas such as cars, the home, etc.

• Deborah Womack with Cooperative Extension can help anyone get started with personal financial management and budget planning.

• Drop in Job Seekers lab on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Computer Learning Center from 9:00-11:00 AM.

• Free access to fantastic databases such as Learning Express, which includes training for career oriented skills. Also includes test prep for tests such as the GED, ASVAB, etc.

• NC Knows: live chat with librarians who can answer general questions or can offer help with the databases provided free through NC Live.

• New MultiSearch tool can lead you to articles and books on any topic.

• Netlibrary has 26,000 eBooks available for use online.

• Free access to downloadable audio books.

• Free North Carolina legal forms through NCLive.

• Home Improvement Reference Center.

• Online auto repair manuals such as Chilton.

• Business information through Reference USA.

• Consumer Reports available through Masterfile database; other popular magazines are also available through this database.

• Free programs, including Dr. Hungerford’s retirement planning, cultural events, movies, and more.

• Free children’s programming, including story time, craft programs, summer reading, and more.

• Free access to tutors through NCLive and ; this provides subject specific tutoring through online chat.

General Ways to Save

• Check out websites such as

• Check out free videos through sites like YouTube in order to learn a new craft; handmade presents are great for the holidays.

• Not working? Call your car insurance provider and they can drop your rate since you are no longer driving to work.

• Try out the barter system; babysit for a friend in exchange for yard work, for example.

• Live simply; cut down unnecessary excess, and organize.

• Keep in mind that some online coupons will not print from library’s public computers.

• End of season sales at CVS can reach discounts of up to 90%; keep in mind that the reward bucks system can also be very helpful in keeping costs low.
