Useful Websites for Articles, Information and Data on China

Resources for academic publications - a good place to get started looking for existing research on topics or places that interest you. Note: some sources may only be available through campus computers or from home via the UW library’s proxy server.

Ingenta, GeoBase, Expanded Academic Index, and a number of other topic-specific databases are all useful for searching for articles in academic journals (both online and print) and are available through the UW libraries database page at .

UW East Asia Library has a lot of materials on China, including statistical yearbooks of the whole country, provinces, and cities. see  (The latest Chinese statistical yearbooks are also on CD-ROM in EAL) 

An extensive bibliography of useful websites on China is found in Fravel, M. Taylor, 2000. “Online and on China: Research Sources in the Information Age,” The China Quarterly, pp.821-842. This reference can be found online through the UW library’s online subscription to The China Quarterly or in the print version at Suzzallo or EAL.

ChinaDataOnline

UW has recently subscribed to , a very useful Internet website that has statistics by province, city, and county for recent years. It also has population data from Census 2000, and other sources, as well as a number of maps providing visualizations of certain aspects of that data (energy production, educational attainment, income, etc.).

PRC Government Homepage ()

This English-language site contains links to ministries, provincial governments, and other parts of the Chinese government apparatus. At times you may have to wade through a little Chinese; for provincial government links, for instance, clicking on the map will probably be easier than figuring out the Chinese links for each province.

China in Time and Space (CITAS) at .

CITAS is part of a project to compile spatially and temporally referenced data on China. Those familiar with ArcInfo and the ESRI Geographic Information Systems suite may wish to explore these data sets, most of which can be freely downloaded in geo-coded e00 (ArcInfo export) format and used in the GIS software available in the geography department or elsewhere on campus.
