| |What are the 12 animals of the zodiac and how were they chosen? What traits are |

| |associated with them? How are the animals used as symbols? |

| |What is their animal sign, and what traits does it represent? |

|Step 3: Teacher Procedure |

|ANTICIPATORY SET |Students will break into groups of 3-4 |

| |Each group will be given images of an animal from the Chinese Zodiac |

| |Students will brainstorm characteristics that come to mind about each animal |

| |After about 5 minutes, groups will share out to the class the characteristics they came up with |

|DIRECTED LESSON |Tell the students that these animals are used as symbols in the Chinese calendar. |

| |Explain how the calendar is divided into 12-year cycles, each year being associated with a certain|

| |animals. |

| |Explain that the first two in the list are the rat and the ox |

| |Read aloud the story The Chinese Zodiac which explains how the 12 zodiac animals were chosen. |

| |Explain that this is one of many versions of this particular tale of origins. |

| |As you read the story, have students listen to the descriptions of each animal and the |

| |characteristics associated with them |

|GUIDED PRACTICE |Working back in their group, students will complete the chart that identifies the positive and |

| |negative traits of each animal |

| |Students may use the list on the whiteboard, or the reading material from Chinese Zodiac from |

| | |

|INDEPENDENT PRACTICE |After completing the chart, students will predict which animal of the zodiac they fall under based|

| |on the characteristics listed |

| |Teacher will then list the years of each animal of zodiac |

| |Students will then make an acrostic poem using their name and adjectives that describe them |

| |Afterwards students may decorate their poem using symbols from the Chinese Zodiac. |
