Commence Wednesday 25/03: commence in library class

Due Monday 30/03 (11.59pm at the latest)

Name: ___________________________________________

Student Number: __________________________________

Instructions: You will need to make use of internet search engines, on-line journal databases and UTS clinical documentation to successfully complete this assessment. You are required to ‘reference’ your answers appropriately using APA style. For purposes of writing and referencing, please refer to the UTS library website:

1. Locate the document: White, A.(2004). A cumulative review of the range and incidence of significant adverse events associated with acupuncture. Acupuncture in Medicine 22(3), 122-133.

A). According to the author, why is the term adverse events ‘preferred for acupuncture’ when discussing the associated risk outcomes?

B). What is the most commonly reported mechanical trauma resulting from acupuncture?

C). What is the most commonly reported infection resulting from acupuncture?

2. Search appropriate journal databases (such as AMED, Medline) and find two (2) individual journal articles mentioning adverse events (or effects) and acupuncture treatment. Limit the search to human and in the last 10 years. For each journal article located:

i) List the documented adverse event(s),

ii) Cause or a reason for the adverse event’s occurrence (which may or may not be located in the article which means you will need to think about this and possible read a little further); and

iii) The correct reference details for a journal article using the APA reference style.

iv) Attach proof of your search in Medline (OVID) or AMED (etc.): please print a copy of the search history (only the first page) which should list a summary of your Search Term, Limiters/Expanders, Results. Don’t print a listing of abstracts.

Article #1 (Acupuncture):

i) Adverse Event(s)

ii) Reason/cause of the adverse event(s)

iii) Reference details (APA style)

Article #2 (Acupuncture):

i) Adverse Event(s)

ii) Reason/cause of the adverse event(s)

iii) Reference details (APA style)

3. Search the journal databases and find a minimum of two (2) separate papers, (AND different from those listed in Question 2), that report incidences of adverse event(s) related to the use of Chinese herbal medicine. Limit the search to human and in the last 10 years. For each journal article located:

i) List the documented adverse event(s),

ii) The correct reference details for a journal article using the APA reference style.

iii) Attach proof of your search in Medline (OVID) or AMED (etc.): please print a copy of the search history (only the first page) which should list a summary of your Search Term, Limiters/Expanders, Results. Don’t print a listing of abstracts.

Finally, as evidence of undertaking searches for the articles (in Medline (OVID) or AMED) in Question 3, please print a copy of the search history (only the first page) which should list a summary of your Search Term, Limiters/Expanders, Results. Don’t print a listing of abstracts.

Article #1 (herb):

i) Adverse Event(s)

ii) Reference details

Article #2 (herb):

i) Adverse Event(s)

ii) Reference details (APA style)

4. Provide the reference details (using APA style) of a literature source with a primary report, (ie, not a secondary source quoting the primary source), which documents spinal cord puncture OR brain puncture by acupuncture. NOTE: The reference must not have been used in Questions 2 and 3.

5. What botanical product was substituted for the Chinese herb Stephania tetrandra resulting in extensive interstitial fibrosis of the kidneys (kidney failure) in about 100 patients in Belgium? (Reference details required.)

6. Locate the article titled Risks Associated With the Practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine: An Australian Study by Bensoussan A, Myers S, Carlton A, published in 2000.

▪ According to the authors, what is the frequency rate of adverse events encountered by a practitioner in equivalent full-time Chinese Medicine (CM) practice?

▪ The authors note a statistically significant difference between adverse events reported for CM practice by medical and non-medical practitioners (p < 0.001). In your own words, describe a likely reason(s) for the apparent difference in reported adverse event frequency.

7. Some health professionals will describe adverse event signs and symptoms* that have resulted from a treatment intervention in terms of a ‘healing crisis’ or a ‘side effect’. This may not always be the case. Thus: What do you think is meant by the term ‘healing crisis’ and ‘side effect’ with respect to Chinese medicine clinical practice and how does it differ from an ‘adverse event’? (To answer this question you may need to:

i) Undertake internet searches or journal database searches on the terms notes.

ii) Read through your search results to determine which sources are most useful to help with this question and then determine how to define the term ‘healing crisis’ and ‘side effect’ with respect to TCM clinical practice? (Note that the term has many different meanings and you may need to adapt the terms with respect to TCM practice.)

iii) Finally, using the definition of an ‘adverse event’ and ‘side effect’ noted in Question 1 (and other readings), how then do the terms differ from an adverse event? Is there a difference?

iv) ensure to reference any information or readings used in your answer (APA style).

* (Signs relate to objective ‘observable’ events which can be identified by third parties. Bruising is a sign. Symptoms are subjective, they are experienced by the patient but cannot be objectively verified. For example, pain and headaches are symptoms).
