Summary of contentThis module assumes elementary prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language through topics relating to social and everyday life in the countries where the target language is spoken. Each session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme. Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.9. Summary of content2 hours of class contact per week. Classes are conducted as far as possible in the target language.10. Assessment detailsStudents must complete all of the following:Continuous learning journals – students should submit at least FOUR learning journals.Presentation – students will produce a short video in the target language to evidence (in the target language).11. AimsStudents will continue to practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as acquiring further basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations. Full use will be made of communicative methods. Students will further develop autonomy in language learning under the guidance of their language tutor.12. Learning outcomesKnowledge and Understanding of : Pronunciation/Pinyin; Simplified Chinese script; Mandarin Chinese syntax; Mandarin Chinese sentence semantics; Gist comprehension and more detailed reconstruction of more challenging audio material; Development of oral skillsIntellectual skills: The ability to understand the standard Mandarin Chinese linguistic system both spoken and in the written form in the context of the topics studied; Develop an awareness of cultural specificityProfessional Skills: Preparation of short oral and written presentations on topics covered; Listening with discrimination in order to elicit information; Reading with discrimination in order to elicit information Transferable Skills: Pair and group work; Time management; Independent language study; Ability to organise and present material; Ability to communicate effectively. ................
