?Question for written answer E-006075/2020to the CommissionRule 138Mara Bizzotto (ID)Subject:Chinese assault on Italian and European infrastructure and companies – Commission protection of Member States’ strategically important economic assetsIn March 2019, the state-owned China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea signed a cooperation agreement with a view to establishing a partnership on industry and logistics for the Port of Trieste. The agreement is part of the ambitious New Silk Road investment and infrastructure project, under which China is also interested in the Port of Taranto. In addition to taking an interest in infrastructure, China has also been actively buying up Italian and European strategically important companies and assets, particularly those in the manufacturing and telecommunications sectors.Taking into account that Italian and European industry has been subject to unfair competition from China, which has been engaging in dumping and subsidising its own companies; that the US recently added the CCCC to its blacklist of foreign companies because it believes that the company has been involved in corruption and predatory financing and has caused economic damage in some parts of the world; and that the current economic crisis, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic, has hit a very large number of companies in Italy and the EU very badly, and China may now set its sights on them:1.Is the Commission aware of China’s penetration into the Italian and European economies?2.How will it counter China’s predatory moves on Italian and European strategically important economic assets? ................
