PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR 24 HOUR URINE COLLECTION

Random Urine Collection GuidelinesRandom urine specimens should be collected using a clean catch “mid-stream” collection method in order to reduce contamination*. Please refer to the following instructions for a clean catch “midstream” collection:a. Wash hands with soap and water prior to collection. b. Wipe as instructed with the provided antiseptic towelette. Females: Separate the genital folds (labia) and gently wipe the antiseptic towelette from front to back. Keep genital folds separated until urine collection is complete.Males: Wipe the tip of the penis around the opening (urethra) with the antiseptic towelette. If uncircumcised, gently pull back the foreskin prior to cleansing. Keep holding the foreskin in place until the urine collection is complete. c. Begin urination into the toilet for a few seconds. d. Carefully place the sterile urine container under the stream of urine and collect an adequate specimen. e. Finish urinating into the toilet.f. Tightly screw the lid on to the container immediately, taking care not to touch the inside of the container. g. Sample should be returned to the laboratory as soon as possible. If immediate delivery is not possible, please contact the laboratory at (816)691-1300 to determine available options. *Note: Urine testing for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea requires a different collection method.
